Gambino is a minor antagonist in the Golden Age Arc of the Berserk series. He's Guts' adopted father who and the leader of a band of mercenaries who relentlessly abused him and made his childhood a living hell.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • Prior to adopting Guts, he was the leader of a band of mercenaries who would kill and pillage for money. It's also shown that they also kidnapped women and forced them to be sex slaves, with Shisu being one of them.
  • Although it was said that he had a soft spot for Shisu, he still showed little to no care for her as he left her during her final moments while she was sick with the plague. It's also implied that he was the father of the baby that she miscarried prior to the events of the series.
  • After finding an infant Guts underneath a tree of hanged corpses, Gambino initially considers abandoning him there to die, with him only letting Shisu take him because he simply didn't care and thought that the baby would probably die soon anyway.
  • He was horribly abusive towards Guts, putting him to fight with his army ever since he was just an infant, while also often beating him whenever he didn't obey his rules.
    • Although it was shown that he would ocasionally act affable towards Guts and showed signs of caring for him (at least a little bit), such as when he gave Guts some medicine for his wound after having scarred his nose, not only were they very few and far between, but it was most likely pure pragmatism on his part in order to keep Guts under his control. What's worse is that Guts genuinely did love Gambino and viewed him as a father.
  • He was responsible for giving Guts the scar on his nose during a swordfight training where he slashed him with his blade simply because Guts had bested him in combat. This attitude was even called out by his own men, who called him childish for lashing out on a small kid for a petty reason.
  • In perhaps his most vile action, he sells out Guts to be raped by the pederast mercenary, Donovan. This moment severely traumatized Guts, giving him an aversion of being touched and making him afraid of intimacy in general, which was something that he took a long time to heal from.
  • After losing his right leg to a cannonball during a battle, Gambino took out his frustrations over his handicap on Guts, blaming him for what happened to him, even though Guts had saved him during the battle and stood by his side while he recovered.
  • He tries to kill Guts in a fit of rage, blaming him for bringing bad fortune to him and saying that he should have died under that tree. He also reveals to Guts that he had actually sold him out to Donovan that fateful night, leading to Guts beheading him while trying to defend himself.
  • Even after his death, Guts would still have nightmares about him and guilt for killing the man he considered a father.
  • Overall, he's directly responsible for turning Guts into the violent and abrasive person he would become, and is responsible for a good part of the trauma he carries to this day. Ironically, Guts would eventually grow out of his more violent ways over time and actually ended up becoming a better father to his own child, the Moonlight Boy, than Gambino ever was for him.
