Gary Smith is the titular main antagonist of the 2006 video game Bully.
He is a malicious but highly intelligent student, aiming to take over the student population of the private high school of Bullworth Academy. To do so, Smith feigns friendship with the hero Jimmy Hopkins to use him as muscle and a scapegoat, but Hopkins overtime comes to realize what kind of person Gary is, becoming his archenemy.
He was voiced by Peter Vack.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- In general, Gary is despised by everyone at Bullworth Academy, which is stated to be the worst school in the country, is mostly filled with bullies and corrupt authority figures, and, according to Jimmy Hopkins, has an alumni consisting of "nothing but arms dealers, serial killers and corporate lawyers."
- He constantly (both physically and psychologically) abuses and even tortures many of the other students, main example being fellow student Pete Kowalski. During Halloween, he forces Pete to wear a humiliating pink bunny suit for example. He is also heavily implied to be prejudiced against the LGBT community, as he makes many jokes about Petey supposedly being gay.
- To show his support for Nazis, he implicatively styles his hair after Adolf Hitler and even eagerly dresses as a Nazi officer for Halloween.
- He uses Jimmy as muscle and urges him into doing some various offenses across the school, many of which include performing harmful pranks on people. Even after everything he has done for him, he conjures up some Insane Troll Logic and becomes paranoid that Jimmy will "betray him" and betrays him first by manipulating everybody in the entire school against him via false rumors.
- His last speech during the final showdown clearly reveals that he shows literally no care about anyone and rejects any excuses for his crimes, admitting that he did that only out of joy and sadism.
- He is so despised by the narrative that Jimmy calls him out for being an outright loser rather than a heinous villain in their final confrontation.
- His defeat is incredibly satisfying, where he cowardly runs away from Jimmy while trying to kill him and easily gets beaten by him because he can't handle himself in a fight. Him being dragged to the principals office and kicked around and labeled as trash is in turn satisfying.
- To drive the point of Gary being Hate Sink, he is regularly considered an "unlikeable bastard" by the various media.
Trivia[]
- While the creators of Bully stated that Jimmy Hopkins is not a type of person to turn out like all the protagonists or antagonists in the Grand Theft Auto series, there is nothing to be said about Gary's future. However, given that Gary being considered as the exact opposite of Jimmy, and judging by Gary's behavior, he is likely to be end up as a criminal when he reaches adulthood, which would make him even worse.
- Despite his Hate Sink status, Peter Vack enjoyed playing the role of Gary and is willing to come back to voice him in a possible sequel.
