Gato was a businessman who had power over the Land of Waves. He wanted to kill Tazuna and anyone who stood in the way of his money, wealth, and power in the Land of Waves. He worked with Zabuza Momochi, Haku, and a band of men to ensure that no one would stand in his way of maintaining his power. Gato is the main antagonist of the Land of Waves arc in the Naruto anime and manga series.

What Makes him Hated?

• Gato ran an illegal business in the land of waves which included selling illegal drugs, contraband, and other goods to make a profit.
• He was shown to only care for himself, his wealth, and power. He showed no genuine care for anyone.
• He had Kaiza, a genuinely kind-hearted and courageous man, tortured and eventually murdered to send a message to other civilians about the consequences of standing up to him. This had a major negative impact on Inari.
• He had Zabuza and Haku go after Tazuna because the latter presented competition and a threat to his wealth and business enterprise.
• On more than one occasion, Gato is shown to be exceptionally disrespectful to Zabuza and Haku, even though they both worked for him.
  • When Zabuza was resting from his battle against Team 7, Gato appears and makes fun of both Zabuza and Haku and attempts to put his hand on Zabuza as he was resting prompting Haku to grab his hand out of sheer anger.
  • After Haku's death, Gato appears with a gang of men in an attempt to kill Zabuza, Tazuna, and Team 7. He told Zabuza that he intended to kill him because it was expensive to hire a skilled ninja from one of the Five Great Nations. He casually in an arrogant tone told Zabuza that it was a mistake hiring him.
  • When he saw Haku's dead body on the bridge he attacks his body by kicking it. The act irritated Naruto and provoked Zabuza to the point that the latter decided to run head-first into a mob of men at the cost of his own life to slay Gato.
• Gato was cowardly. He ran away after provoking Zabuza and hoped that the mob of men he hired could kill him.
• Overall, he was an extremely oppressive businessman who benefited from oppressing the people in the Land of Wave.
