“ | Ash Ketchum: I'm sorry! Gengar's Trainer: Look where you're going! Trainer's Girlfriend: What is it now? You're not still cursed, are you? (giggles) Gengar's Former Trainer: That was more than three years ago. Now, I've got way more luck than I know what to do with and no curse! But when that thing was around, it was awful. I couldn't win a battle and every Pokémon I tried to catch would get away. I fall down the steps and I lose things all the time. No matter what I did, it was nothing but bad luck! Trainer's Girlfriend: Uh, excuse me, but that's why they called it a curse! (Laughs) Gengar's Trainer: But that bringer of bad luck is gone now. I'm the luckiest! After all, its just a Gengar. I shouldn't've caught that thing anyway. |

Gengar's Unnamed Former Trainer is a minor antagonist who appeared in the Anime Pokémon Journeys: The Series, where he had first appeared in the episode "A Chilling Curse!".
He was a Pokémon Trainer who once owned a Gengar that Ash Ketchum would eventually catch. However, three years ago in the TV Series, after growing tired of losing battles and failing to catch other Pokémon, he believed Gengar was responsible for this streak of failures.
As a result, he released Gengar, lying by telling it to wait at the abandoned house. His Gengar obediently waited for his return, even as the location was converted into the Cerise Laboratory for three years.
He was voiced by Tatsuki Kobe in the Japanese version, while also being voiced by Cedric Williams in the English version, Hassan Hamdan in the Arabic version, and by Pablo Argôllo in the Brazilian Portuguese version.
What Makes Him A Hate Sink?[]
- After losing battles in the anime, he shows to be a sore loser, as he would blame his Gengar, who has done nothing but be loyal to him, for the pettiest reasons (i.e: losing Pokémon battles, failing to catch Pokémon, falling down the steps, and constantly losing his belongings) instead of taking his own responsibility.
- The Pokémon Trainer decides to release Gengar at an abandoned house, lying by telling him that he will return to pick it up only to leave, abandon his Gengar there, and never come back.
- This action is what caused his Gengar to become furious, causing it to terrorize people in said building as it got converted into the Cerise Laboratory, feeling betrayed that his trainer would never return.
- This would also mean that The Former Trainer was the main reason why his Gengar became misanthropic in the first place as the Gengar had attacked people in embitterment from the abandonment until the Gengar got later adopted by Ash Ketchum and caught as his own Pokémon.
- In the present day, after Ash Ketchum, who is unaware that Gengar was hiding in his shadow, ends up bumping into Gengar's former trainer and his girlfriend the former rudely tells Ash to watch where he is going and is shown to have no remorse for his actions in the past, as the trainer would brag to Ash about how he released and abandoned Gengar, even referring to Gengar as "bad luck" and "a curse". This would result in Gengar becoming furious and attacking the trainer and his girlfriend in rage at what his former trainer did.
- When Ash Ketchum tells the Trainer to talk to his Gengar to try to calm the latter down, The Trainer decides still act like a coward and blames all of his own misfortunes on his Gengar, rudely telling to it that he doesn't need him anymore. This causes Goh to gasp in shock and upset Ash Ketchum and Gengar even more for how disrespectful the former trainer was, only for the Trainer to rudely tell Ash to shut up and run away, showing that he refuses to make up for his wrongdoings.
- Another example of the Trainer's cowardice is brought into light as he would cower down when he was attacked by his own Gengar and treat his own Gengar as something that gives him "bad luck" everywhere he goes.
- Goh's Scorbunny and Ash Ketchum were also shown to both be appalled by The Trainer's horrible treatment of Gengar, with Goh being in shock at The Trainer's actions.
