~ George Harvey moments before raping and murdering Susie Salmon. |
George Harvey (referred to as Mr. Harvey throughout the film) is the main antagonist of The Lovely Bones, the 2009 film adaptation of the 2002 novel by Alice Sebold. He is a serial killer who rapes and murders young girls, including the protagonist, Susie Salmon.
He was portrayed by Stanley Tucci.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Before the events of the movies, he has already raped and murdered one grown woman and eight young girls, the youngest of which was only six years old.
- While he comes across as a friendly dollhouse builder and neighbour to the Salmon family, that is all a facade to hide his true nature as a sadistic pedophile who rapes and murders young girls.
- He lures 14-year-old Susie Salmon into an underground bunker which he built, and proceeds to rape and murder her.
- He mutilates her body and hides her in a safe in his basement so that no one can find her.
- In one disgusting scene, Susie, who is now a ghost in the In-Between, witnesses Harvey cleaning her blood off him in a bathtub, with a sexually stimulated look on his face. This cause Susie to scream in horror and anger.
- He lies to the police about his whereabouts on the night of Susie's murder, claiming that he was at his house the whole time.
- He spies on young couples making out, getting sexual pleasure from watching them.
- He gets sexual pleasure from thinking about his horrific murder of Susie.
- His actions tears apart the Salmon family, with Susie's mother Abigail in denial about her daughter's death, and her father Jack becoming hellbent on finding what out happened to her.
- To make matters even worse, he has his eyes on Susie's younger sister Lindsay, who he plans to make her next victim, which would tear apart the Salmons' lives even more.
- When Jack finds out that Harvey did something to his daughter, instead of admitting to his crimes, Harvey cowardly retreats back to his house, not wanting to face punishment for his crimes.
- Jack goes out to the cornfields at night with a bat to find Harvey, with the intent to kill him out of revenge. He mistakes a couple for Harvey, attacking the man. The man retaliates and nearly beats Jack to death, only stopping due to the woman's pleading. For a brief moment, you can see Harvey watching the entire ordeal from a distance with a slight smirk on his face, getting pleasure from watching Jack nearly die.
- When he realises that Lindsay has snuck into his house in order to find evidence, he chases her down, with the intent to kill her. When she gets away, he realises that the truth will go out, and he disposes of Susie's corpse in a sinkhole and leaves his house forever in order to avoid arrest.
- It's implied he raped and murdered even more girls over many years after he left.
- Now an elderly man, he attempts to lure a girl named Clair into his car, using his friendly facade and asking if she needs a ride. Clair sees through his tricks, and rejects his offer before walking away, telling him to piss off. Harvey, now absolutely shocked that someone could see through his facade, is hit on the shoulder by a fallen icicle (implied to have been dislodged by Susie from heaven), which causes him to slip and fall off a cliff and to his well deserving demise.
- Unlike the original novel version, who is tragic due to his awful childhood and feels remorseful over his actions, the film version has a fake tragedy, zero redeeming qualities or mitigating factors.
Trivia[]
- Only the film version of George Harvey counts a Hate Sink, as the novel version is too tragic and pitiful. Even Susie Salmon feels bad for him once she learns of his awful childhood.
- To emphasize his Hate Sink status, even Stanley Tucci, despite winning praise for his performance as Harvey, felt uncomfortable portraying him.
