The Giant Magnet is the main antagonist of the 1987 animated film The Brave Little Toaster, which is based on the 1980 novel of the same name by the late Thomas M. Disch. It is an electromagnetic crane stationed at Ernie's Disposal.
While having no voice, the sound effects for it were provided by David John West.
What Makes It a Hate Sink?[]
- It is a heartless killing machine that will stop at nothing (and absolutely nothing) to have the main protagonists compacted by the crusher, even though they are still in perfect working order and therefore not junk.
- It holds grudges and doesn't let things go. Such is the case when it hunts the main characters alone when they're just going to evade it at every turn. The fact that it sucks an entire heap of junk that they're hiding behind proves that it could care less about any other piece or pile of junk as long as they alone are compacted. If it had any sense, it would've simply forgotten about them and moved on to collect everything else in the yard that is junk.
- It has no qualms about killing humans just to achieve personal goals. When the master comes along to retrieve his appliances, the magnet still refuses to move on as it stalks him, all the while hiding its sentience with clearly malicious intent. It carries the master along with his claim back to the crusher and traps them all under additional scrap to make sure they are all disposed of for good.
- It has no sympathetic traits and is taken 100% seriously. Its angry expression doesn't even change when it's caught off guard by the sight of a green pickup truck driving towards the crusher of its own accord. In comparison, the other antagonists in the film all had their own sympathetic or good points.
- The air conditioner simply felt neglected and left out, that is until he realized he was loved all along when the master briefly returned to the cottage after all those years and repaired him good as new.
- Elmo St. Peters had no idea the appliances were alive and actually seemed like a nice man, even if his business ethics were questionable. To his credit, he did save Toaster and his friends from drowning in quicksand, plus he showed affection towards his dog Quadruped.
- As for the cutting-edge appliances, at least they cared about their master as much as anything else his family had owned over the years. One could see how heartbroken Plugsy was when he overheard the master turn down his mother's suggestion of bringing her stuff to use in college.
- Additionally, it receives no comeuppance afterwards for its crimes yet it seems to not want to pursue both the master and his appliances anymore.
