| “ | I'm not happy Bob. Not happy. | „ |
| ~ Huph's most famous quote. |
Gilbert Huph is a minor antagonist in the 2004 Pixar feature-film The Incredibles. He is the sleazy and sordid CEO of Insuricare, and the ex-boss of Bob Parr. He does not show any care to his clients, willingly scamming them out of their insurance, and only cares about making money for himself.
He was voiced by Wallace Shawn.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- To get things out of the bat, Huph is an insurance fraud, who denies aid to his own clients in order to scam them off money as much as possible, even if they have suitable claims.
- He overall made Bob Parr's new life after being forced to give up his life as a superhero, very miserable.
- It's also heavily implied that he doesn't pay Bob the wages for his already, miserable job. It's also likely that Gilbert never pays his other employees for their work as well.
- He enters the movie berating Bob for giving his clients too much help so they are able to find every loophole in his policy and are receiving the aid they seek.
- He calls Bob to his office as he shamelessly admits his intentions to not help the people but to take as much money as possible.
- He's not only greedy and immoral, but also stupid. He does not realize that if he has his employees keep denying healthcare, he will lose clients, which will hurt his business. So he's not even a good businessman.
- He tells Bob that a company is like a giant clock with cogs that mesh well in an effort to make Bob support his scamming operation.
- When Bob looks at a man being mugged and says that he needs help, Huph scolds him for looking away and says that he hopes they won't have to cover him.
- When Bob attempts to leave in order to help the mugged man, Huph threatens to fire him if he does. It's important to note that no responsible employer would permit an employee to confront a mugger in such a situation, as it puts the employee at risk of injury. Moreover, Huph was unaware that Bob was a former superhero. At the very least, Huph should have displayed some concern for the victim and offered to call the police, instead of remaining indifferent and making a sick joke about the incident. Though given Gilbert's incredibly petty nature, it's not surprising that he allowed a criminal to get away and never called the authorities.
- After Bob realizes that the man has been mugged, and the mugger got away, Huph mockingly tells him that he was lucky; otherwise, he would have lost his job. This provokes Bob, who then flings Huph across four walls, severely injuring him.
- Although Bob shouldn't have done it in the first place and later feels extreme remorse for it, it's hard to blame him as he was trying to calm down only for Huph to mock him.
- While his quotes may be seen as funny to the audience, in-universe they don't detract from his villainy at all, and he is taken very seriously. At least Syndrome, despite being Pure Evil, qualifies as Laughably Evil.
Trivia[]
- Despite being an obvious Hate Sink, Huph is surprisingly popular among fans likely due to Wallace Shawn's over-the-top voice acting. It also helped that he's one of the film's biggest sources of Internet memes.
- Huph is so hateable, one of the most common premises for fan fictions for the Incredibles is that Bob’s co-workers don't report what he did to Huph due to hating him.
- His voice actor Wallace Shawn, had worked with Pixar in the past, voicing Rex from Toy Story, who is Love Exalted, the opposite to Gilbert Huph.
- This was the very first Hate Sink page ever created.
