“ | I look down on existence from a much higher perspective than you do. I witness this world, this universe and the truth of all things. That yields deeper understanding. Wisdom. The realization that all mortals should be destroyed. The one and only mistake among all divine creations. That is what mortals are. And this mistake is egregious. To shape existence into the beautiful utopia it was always meant to be, the mistake must be corrected. I will purge all mortals from existence. IN PLACE OF THE GODS WHO REFUSE TO ADMIT FAILURE!!! | „ |
~ Goku Black. |
Zamasu, or Goku Black is the main antagonist of the Future Trunks Arc in Dragon Ball Super. Once thought to be an unknown being with mysterious origins, Black is later revealed to be Zamasu, one of the apprentice Supreme Kais from Universe 10, before switching bodies with Goku and killing him. Black had an intense hatred for mortals and wanted to kill all of them under his Zero Mortals Plan.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
Both versions[]
- He thought that all mortals were flawed beings, and the gods could not take them lightly. As a result, he devised the Zero Mortals Plan.
- He killed his own mentor, Gowasu, who raised him as his apprentice showing complete disregard for him despite his mentor's care.
- He was hypocritical and petty, as he never saw any flaws in the way he was thinking, but consistently generalized all mortals as dangerous and bad, despite that not being the case, since he proved to be far worse than any of them. What also doesn't help is case is the fact that he stole the body of the very thing he hates.
- The only reason he was able to get along with Future Zamasu is because they are both the same person, even if from alternate timelines. Thus, their relationship only highlights how narcissistic Zamasu is.
- He is one of the few Dragon Ball villains that does not have a tragic past or the excuse of being made, born or raised into evil. He, as a Supreme Kai, was supposed to be benevolent and watch over Universe 10 and keep it safe, but became a delusional, hypocritical narcissist out of his own free will. In Dragon Ball FighterZ, Piccolo points out that Zamasu is no god, but rather a disgrace.
Anime[]
- When he was Zamasu, when Goku kindly gave him his hand to help him up after defeating him, he tries to attack him and only accepts on Gowasu's order.
- After switching bodies with Goku, he not only killed him, but also Chi-Chi and Goten. The latter two he murdered out of petty sadism even though they posed no threat to him.
- He and Future Zamasu tortured Goku and mocked him over stealing his body and murdering Chi Chi and Goten. They both smiled as they told Goku the truth to intentionally provoke him. Their actions would prove to provoke Goku into a rage.
- He and Future Zamasu blame Future Trunks for everything they did and even called him a "sinner", when they themselves are the real sinners, again highlighting the hypocrisy of both.
- Despite his cool demeanor and portrayal, that doesn't overshadow how despicable his hypocrisy and crimes are and they only highlight how arrogant and conceited he is.
Manga[]
- His grudge against Goku is even pettier than in the anime. In the anime, he could not stand being bested in a fight with Goku and continued to harbor intense hate for him and all mortals. In the manga, he never fought with Goku or had any prior meetings with him. He simply saw Goku fighting in the Universe 6 versus 7 tournaments on GodTube and was furious that a mortal had become more powerful than gods. This also leads to a bout of stupidity he did not suffer in the anime. In the manga, instead of desiring the body of Goku, he initially desired the body of Monaka, as he was angry with him as well for also supposedly surpassing gods in power. The idiocy comes in the fact that he doesn't think to wish for the body of the strongest mortal in existence, instead going for Monaka and later Goku after learning Monaka is actually a weakling compared to them, simply because they were the strongest mortals he knew of. For all he could have known, there could have been other mortals far more powerful. Later events would reveal that this was indeed the case, with Goku, Vegeta, Jiren, Broly, Gohan, Piccolo and Frieza surpassing all the Gods of Destruction in power.
- Unlike in the anime, Black openly relishes in his sadism, is more prone to losing his composure, and isn't as unbeatable as in the anime, at one point suffering a severe beating from Vegeta and only surviving because Future Zamasu heals him. He is also more of a brute in the way he fights and lacks the elegance of his anime counterpart, basically stripping him of everything that made him cool in the anime.
- He and Future Zamasu do not get along as well as in the anime and are prone to arguing, lacking their coordinated teamwork from the anime.
- He impales Gowasu with his ki bladewith a sadistic smile when he gave him the chance to redeem himself. Gowasu only survives because of a Senzu bean.
- As Fused Zamasu, in an act of dishonor he uses Future Mai as a shield to avoid being destroyed by Goku's Hakai.
- He and Future Zamasu explicitly plan to continue their rampage beyond Future Trunks' timeline, intending to repeat the process with all of the other timelines.
