Ser Gregor Clegane, also known as The Mountain That Rides, is one of the secondary antagonists of the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its television adaptation Game of Thrones.
He is the older brother and archenemy of Sandor Clegane and is the head of House Clegane, which are landed knights and bannermen to House Lannister. Gregor is a freakishly tall and large man, almost eight feet tall, and for this he was often called The Mountain That Rides or simply The Mountain. In the TV show, he served as a major antagonist throughout the series until his final death in combat against his brother Sandor.
He was portrayed by Conan Stevens in the first season, Ian Whyte in the second season and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson from the fourth season onwards.
What Makes Him Hated?[]
- He is one of the most cruel and sadistic characters in the series.
- As a child, he pushed his little brother, Sandor into a fire and tried to kill him. He was never punished for it and Sandor came out scarred and with a phobia of fire.
- Helps Tywin Lannister in his wars and even the latter resented some of his actions, including brutally murdering her Targaryen boys and Elia Martell after raping her.
- He brutally murders women, children and animals to express Tywin's displeasure after his son Tyrion was captured by Catelyn Stark.
- Once he killed a soldier who was snoring next to him.
- Kills his own mare after she fails him in a jousting tournament and then tries to kill Loras Tyrell.
- Tortured prisoners in Harrenhal even though they could be used to make weapons.
- Tried to crush the brotherhood without banners.
- brutally kills Vargo Hot after feeding a pie of his organs to his soldiers.
- cruelly cracks Oberyn Martell's skull.
- Helps Cersei answer and get rid of her enemies.
- Kills Cersei's captive Missandei.
- kills Qyburn brutally and throws his body aside in front of Cersei. This shows her that he was not faithful to her at all.
- In his last moments he tries to kill his brother with pure physical force.
- While Gregor does have somewhat of an excuse as he was raised from childhood to fight and kill by his father, in addition to also suffering from frequent, horrible migraines that exacerbate his bad temper, it doesn't make him tragic or sympathetic in the slightest because he has absolutely no redeeming qualities and his actions are far too horrific, sadistic, and petty to be justified.
- Even his transformation into a zombie does not make him tragic and he seems to be aware of his actions in order to have moral authority.
