~ Harry Flynn reveals his true nature and betrayal to Nathan Drake. |
Harry Flynn is the secondary antagonist of Naughty Dog's action/adventure shooting game Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
He is a British adventurer skilled in treasure hunting and once an ally of Nathan Drake. However, he shifts allegiance to become the foremost consultant for the Serbian war criminal Zoran Lazarević in their pursuit of the legendary Tree of Life.
He is voiced and motion-captured by Steve Valentine.
What Makes Him A Hate Sink?[]
- While at the start of the game he appears friendly and acts as an ally of Nathan Drake, he later betrays him while they are infiltrating a Turkish museum to receive an ancient oil lamp, trapping him and alerting the guards in the process.
- This resulted in Nate being jailed for three months in a Turkish prison, though his sentence was initially intended to be longer. It was only shortened because Victor Sullivan, Nate’s best friend, chose to bail him out. This action was fully intentional, as he held Drake at gunpoint during his betrayal, stating that he needed to get him out of the way for a bit.
- It is later revealed that the person Flynn was truly working with is a Serbian war criminal named Zoran Lazarevic whose ultimate goal is to conquer the world with an immortal army, using the Tree of Life. Flynn only collaborates with him for the money, which demonstrates extreme greed on his part, as he disregards the potential consequences that could change the course of history and doom the world. He even chooses to betray Nate, a former long-time friend, for this pursuit.
- Throughout the game, he tries to kill Nate in cold blood several times, despite their past friendship, demonstrating his complete disregard for their former bond and revealing his extreme selfishness.
- Chloe Frazer, a double agent working for both Nate’s team and Lazarevic’s private military, even attempts to persuade Flynn to spare Nate at one point. However, he ignores her plea and fires a bullet at Nate instead. This severely weakens Nate, and Flynn nearly succeeds in killing him by sending Lazarevic’s soldiers to finish the job and "put him out of his misery." Fortunately, Nate narrowly survives by blowing up the train wagon, which results in the soldiers' deaths.
- When Nate is captured by Lazarevic, he is ordered to solve a puzzle with Flynn keeping an eye on him and holding him at gunpoint the whole time while they are alone. Throughout this ordeal, Flynn verbally abuses Nate with sarcastic and provoking comments, showing no remorse for his actions and lacking any sympathy towards Drake, despite their past friendship. Nate even remarks on this, but Flynn simply ignores it, truly exemplifying him as a complete backstabber.
- When Lazarevic tells Nate that he has played his hand and lost after solving the puzzle, Flynn aims his gun at Nate with a sadistic facial expression, declaring it the 'end of the road.' He would undoubtedly have pulled the trigger, but only spared Nate because Lazarevic ordered him to lower the gun, insisting that Nate must see the ancient city of Shambhala before his execution.
- After the fight with the guardians of Shambhala breaks out, Flynn is severely injured. Lazarevic gives him a grenade without a pin and sends him after Nate and his team as a suicide bomber. Despite having the opportunity to redeem himself and potentially work with Nate's crew to stop Lazarevic, which would have also given him a chance to survive, he instead follows Lazarevic's orders. He lures Nate's crew close to him, appearing visibly hurt and weakened, prompting Elena Fisher, Nate's girlfriend, to suggest they can still save him. However, he dismisses her, stating she shouldn't play the hero. He then reveals the grenade in his hand, claiming it as a message from Lazarevic, and commits suicide by dropping it, nearly killing Elena who got seriously injured in the process. This heinous action did not benefit him in any way and only resulted in his own death, cementing him as an irredeemable and remorseless individual instead of allowing for potential redemption.
- Overall, he is considered one of the most despicable characters of the Uncharted series as he is so narcissistic and obnoxious that he manages to attract a certain level of hatred, not just between the characters in the game, but also from the players.
