| “ | My poor Dieter. The future is dark. You must try harder to become more like Johan. It's a pity. Why are you such a failure? Why can't you be more like Johan? Tell me why! | „ |
| ~ Hartmann to Dieter. |
Hartmann is a supporting and overarching antagonist of Naoki Urasawa’s Monster. He is a former psychologist and director of Kinderheim 511, who worked for the East German Health Ministry. He became obsessed with Johan Liebert and becoming an adoptive father to Deiter and many other children to turn them into Johan.
He is voiced by Maasaki Yajima in Japanese version and John Snyder in English.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- As a former director of the Kinderheim 511 orphanage, he oversaw horrific experiments on dozens of children, in attempts to make them emotionless soldiers. This also makes him responsible for corrupting Johan into evil and his actions by extension.
- He fanatically praises Johan for being "beyond the program" by causing a riot that induced a massacre between children and staff. He is obsessed with recreating Johan and did this by adopting over 50 children and horrifically abusing them so they would develop Johan's nihilism. This includes not only physical abuse but also psychological as he tells the children how dark the world is and that they can’t live without him.
- He beats Dieter and tries to lie about his injuries when Tenma shows up at his apartment. When Tenma calls him out on it, he instead of showing remorse, calls the cops on Tenma and advises him to leave.
- He beats Deiter again and drags him to the burned down Kinderheim 511 site to show off to Tenma.
- When Deiter begins to want to follow Tenma, he threatens to shoot him. When his threats don’t work, he is reduced to cowardly tears.
- His arrest for child abuse is played completely for karmic satisfaction and serves as his final punishment in the story.
