Helio is a major villain in Bravely Default II. He is seemingly a benevolent man at first, but turns out to have far darker intentions. He is the holder of the Spiritmaster Asterisk (though referred to as a bishop by profession) and the main antagonist of Chapter 3. He is also spy for Holograd, who is assisting them in conquering the kingdom of Rimedhal.

He was voiced by Rhydian Jones in the English Dub, while also being voiced by Fukushi Ochiai in the Japanese Dub.

Why Do We Hate Him?[]

  • On the surface, he is a holy man who is fairly trying people who have been accused of being fairies. If they are accused of being fairies, he sets up a system where they can prove their innocence…or leave Rimedhal if they are indeed fairies.
  • However, it is explained that he in fact tricked everyone into thinking fairies are evil. While they actually do exist (though the fact that no fairies have been discovered in Rimedhal would imply otherwise), fairies are not actually evil. And contrary to what Gladys thought, her parents were not killed by fairies.
  • Why did Helio trick people into thinking fairies were evil? He was secretly hosting executions. He claimed that the Lord of Dragons would save someone if they leapt down the chasm that was located in Rimedhal, but it was a lie.
  • He had been working for Holograd the entire time, and he was executing people that he thought was a threat so that invading Rimedhal would be easier. Many people died, but he simply did not care. In fact, he enjoyed it.
  • While he had pragmatic reasons for secret executions, he legitimately enjoys killing other people.
  • He refers the party as being despicable creatures of deceit, despite tricking everyone in Rimedhal. And he said they were the ones that did not deserve any mercy after all the people he killed.
  • Unlike Gladys (who only realized her prosecutions of the accused were killing people when it was much too late) and Domenic (who honestly believes he is doing what the Lord of Dragons wanted him to do), Helio knew what he was doing from the beginning, and while he is allied with Holograd, he does not have any true loyalty with anyone but himself.
  • He murders his employer Domenic while taunting him that he had never been working for the Lord of Dragons from the beginning contrary to what the oracle had thought, before taking the Fire Crystal (and in a way, giving Holograd a signal for the invasion}.
  • Finally, he discovers Gladys on the battlefield after she was fatally wounded. Since he no longer needs to lie to her, he decides to tell her that not only he had tricked her into helping her kill so many innocent people, but he in fact also had personally killed her parents to ensure her compliance.
    • Eventually, the Lord of Dragons himself decided to take action against him, resulting in him being burned alive.
  • Everything he did was done willingly and for his own gain. He wasn’t insane (as with Folie and Vigintio) or an extremist (as with Castor or Lonsdale). He simply enjoyed his power over life and death, with payment from Holograd as a side. He could have very well been the wonderful man that Gladys thought he was, but instead he chose to become a mass murderer, betray the man who hired him, pretend to be Gladys’ friend only to betray her when he didn’t need her anymore, and sell out Rimedhal to outsiders.

Trivia[]

  • Helios represents all the dangers of placing blind trust in someone. Ironically, his eyes are shut.
