~ The High Evolutionary's raging breakdown towards Rocket. |
The High Evolutionary is the main antagonist of the 2023 science fiction superhero comedy film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the overarching antagonist of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. He is the creator of Rocket Raccoon and the leader of a geneticist organization called Orgocorp.
He was portrayed by Chukwudi Iwuji.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He believes that his life's meaning is to play God and make "all of God's children" suffer.
- He kidnaps animals from other planets (largely Earth) and subjects them to torturous experimentations to make them uplifted sapient beings, Even Groot, the kindest member of the Guardians, treats him with open disgust for the things he did to Rocket to the point where he tells him to suck it.
- He feeds Rocket and his friends the false hope that they would go to Counter-Earth. In reality, he was going to incinerate them and the rest of Batch 89 after harvesting Rocket's brain, doing the same to his other subjects if not imprisoning them for life.
- He bullies Rocket after becoming enraged over the fact that he discovered a miscalculation that caused the uplifted animals to become docile while he couldn't and gloats to his face about how he was stupid for believing his friend group would be a part of Counter-Earth and that he will have all of them incinerated.
- When Rocket plans an escape, he shoots Lylla in front of him to prevent her from escaping, then goes as far as to mock Rocket's uncontrollable sobbing claiming that he "won the crying contest". This was the final straw for Rocket as this made him scratch all of his hair off and disfigure his face. Although it was a cruel punishment, it is in no way played for sympathy because he deserved it for making his life genuinely miserable.
- Takes zero responsibility for High Priestess Ayesha's son being mentally stunted, which was because he ordered them to awaken him too early.
- When Star Lord and Groot confront him, he rudely pretends as if they are not there as he works on a terminal and keeps them waiting. He only acknowledges them when Star Lord understandably gets fed up with waiting and attempts to take the data to save Rocket by force. Even then the High Evolutionary demands Rocket in exchange for said data, even though it's obvious he wouldn't have done so considering he wants to kill the raccoon for his brain.
- He also has the audacity to ask Peter why he's being so hostile towards him when it's blatantly obvious, and when Peter tells him why, he delusionally says that all the horrible things he's done are for the betterment of the universe, which isn't even close to being true.
- While Theel undoubtedly got what he deserved, he showed no sadness, even concern nor even tried to take action when Star-Lord and Groot tackled his loyal servant off of his ship and dropped him to death so that they could dig the head implant containing the key to neutralize the kill switch as means of escaping, instead making a smug remark over how foolish they were to jump down to the self-destructing Counter-Earth.
- He tosses Rocket around like a ragdoll with his telekinesis while calling him an abomination during their confrontation, whilst also mockingly calling him "89P13".
- He prioritizes getting Rocket above his resources. Even his minions thought his obsession with the raccoon was absurd and tried to tell him to detach all of the damaged sections when he refused to listen to it, before he destroyed the entire cockpit with them all in it with a telekinetic outburst.
- He is very hypocritical. His obsession with building a perfect society means blatantly ignoring the fact that he himself is an imperfect organism. And he says there is no god, but he also says to raze the head of a dead god.
- There is almost zero Evil is Cool factor to the High Evolutionary. Nearly every other main villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have to go out on a grand epic final battle, while to rub in how the High Evolutionary is progressively shown to be a dangerously pathetic manchild, the film makers didn't bother giving him an epic final battle and has him get taken down in a gloriously embarrassing curb-stomp battle by all the Guardians tagging up on him and ripping off his face before imprisoning him with no one even bothering to mention his name.
Trivia[]
- Cementing his status as a Hate Sink, James Gunn himself has stated that the High Evolutionary is the cruellest villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even his actor stated how cynical it would be to defend the High Evolutionary's atrocities.
- To add more fuel to the fire, his How It Should Have Ended counterpart is hated by the other villains at the Villain Pub for what he did, with Thanos telling him that he sucks and Dru-Zod physically lashing out at him for killing Groot in said scenario. Lord Voldemort himself states that while he hates children, even he thinks he's "kind of the worst".
- Given that Ego and Najma have cool superpowers, Jigsaw has cool martial arts skills, Ward Meachum had crappy parents, and Laufey, Harold Meachum, D'Spayre, General Dreykov, and What If's version of Yellowjacket are at least somewhat intelligent, the extremely weak and simpleminded High Evolutionary is arguably the most deplorable character in the entire MCU by far.
- Additionally, despite lacking any "love to hate" factors, Raza, Justin Hammer, Diamondback, Sonny Burch, Brad Davis, Zeus, and Titania didn't do anything particularly nauseating.
- He is the current icon of the Article stub template, replacing Vukmir.
