Hogwood is one of two overarching antagonist (alongside Smokestack's Father) of the 2025 period action horror film Sinners. He is the owner of the sawmill which he sold to the Smokestack twins so they can build a juke joint for their business. In the climax, he was revealed to be the Grand Dragon of the Klu Klux Klan of the Mississippi Delta who planned to murder them and their guests out of sheer bigotry. He is the uncle of Bert, and uncle-in-law of Joan. He was portrayed by David Maldonado.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is the Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan of Mississippi Delta, being the one who caused numerous innocent black people to die or get hurt out of sheer bigotry.
- He shows no care for his nephew and niece-in-law leaving them in near poverty while he lives a rich life (although it’s hard to feel bad for Joan and Bert as both are a member of Hogwood's KKK gang).
- He is an extremely greedy white supremacist and racist who believe black people aren’t even people.
- It is heavily implied he and his gang where the ones who killed Delta Slim's friend Rice by castrating him, an innocent black man who was accused of raping a white women.
- What's made worse if this is true he and his gang are responsible for making Delta Slim into a broken alcoholic person.
- He sells the old sawmill to Smoke and Stack knowing full well he and his gang will massacre the twins and the patrons the next morning. It's made worse by the fact that it wasn't just black people in there but Grace and Bo Chow who were Chinese and Mary who was white and half black.
- While being greedy he’s shown to be disgusting spitting on the ground when meeting Smoke and Stack (while this is a common thing people do he done it in the presence of Smoke and Stack).
- Calls both Smokestack Twins boys knowing it's a racist slang.
- Shows his gun in an attempt to threaten the twins.
- He is so vile and disgusting that even Remmick wanted to tear him to shreds after finishing off the people at the juke joint.
- His reasoning for mass lynching is because he’s a hate-fueled bigot who need other people to suffer to feel good about himself.
- Unlike other antagonists of the film (excluding Joan and Bert) who have redeeming or sympathetic qualities, he has none. For example:
- Remmick despite being a vampire just wanted to see his deceased family, friends and ancestors again using Sammie's music believing in equality.
- Stack who cares for his ex-girlfriend Mary, ex-sister-in-law Annie, his cousin Sammie and his siblings, twin brother Smoke and the other patrons.
- Mary who still loves Stack, cares for Annie and Sammie despite attempting to kill Sammie.
- There is not even any implication that he cares for his gang.
- While slowly bleeding to death he asks for a cigarette then attempts to pay Smoke to spare him with the very money Smoke paid him for the mill.
- He is shown to be a dirty coward begging for his life when his gang are killed showing he is fully capable of killing innocent and weak people but becomes weak when people fight back.
- While his death of being shot in the stomach to death multiple times by Smoke is extremely horrific it’s not played for sympathy but rather pure satisfaction for being a vile and disgusting person. His death is played for pure satisfaction as even Annie's spirit didn’t mourn his death.
- He and his gang indirectly caused Smoke to bleed out to death.
