“ | These airbenders are Earth Kingdom citizens, and I am their queen. Taking them will constitute an act of war. If you disobey me, I will bear down on you with the entire force of my kingdom! | „ |
~ Hou-Ting to Korra while rescuing the airbenders |
Earth Queen Hou-Ting is a major antagonist in The Legend of Korra, serving as a major antagonist of Book Three: Change and a posthumous antagonist in Book Four: Balance. Hou-Ting also returns as an antagonistic ghostly vision to Prince Wu in the graphic novel trilogy, Ruins of the Empire. She was the 53rd ruler of the Earth kingdom and the previous ruler, Earth King Kuei's daughter and Prince Wu's grand-aunt.
She was voiced by Jayne Taini.
What Makes Her Hateable?[]
- Is a major tyrant who oppresses her people and starves them and forces them to pay hefty taxes, having sent people to prison solely for being against her and silence them, which makes her tyranny feel much more realistic and close to home, that makes her arguably even more detestable than even Ozai.
- Restarted the use of the Dai Li, clearly aware and wanting to use their extremely morally reprehensible methods in maintaining order in the city through brainwashing.
- Makes a meal out of rare and endangered animals solely because she can, having even fed on baby Air Bison steaks despite Air Bison being endangered.
- Her first meal as the Queen after her father's death was rumored to be Bosco, her father's pet bear and close friend. Word of God confirms the rumours are true.
- Has all the airbenders in Ba Sing Se capture, forcibly conscripted to her army and enslaved, forcing them to undergo rigorous training. Worse, children aren't exempt from this, and even attempted to place the entire Air Nation to be her personal airbending bodyguards.
- Is an utter coward. Ozai and Unalaq may be much more evil, but at least they are willing to put up a fair fight and don't hide behind the backs of their men and can hold themselves. Hou-Ting demeans and abuses people who are defenseless against her and then begs for support from those all who she oppressed when people can actually defend themselves.
- It is satisfying when she gets a brutal death by Zaheer's hand for all the oppression and tyranny she forced the Earth Kingdom to suffer under her rule. It's also completely karmic since she wanted to destroy the freedom of the airbenders and Zaheer was one.
- Is heavily implied to abuse her heir, Prince Wu, to mold him into her perfect heir. This was shown in Ruins of the Empire where King Wu was haunted by the vision of his great-aunt Hou-Ting.
