It, also more commonly known by its main form as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, is the titular main antagonist of the 2017-2019 duology of the same name and will return in some capacity in its upcoming 2025 television series prequel Welcome to Derry.
Like in the original novel and 1990 counterparts, it is an ancient, billion-year-old cosmic entity who takes the form of one's worst fears (particularly children) before it feeds on them. Unlike those versions, however, he lacks the Evil is Cool and Laughably Evil presence.
It as Pennywise was portrayed by Bill Skarsgård, who also played Marquis de Gramont in John Wick: Chapter 4 and Count Orlok in the 2024 remake of Nosferatu.
What Make It A Hate Sink?[]
- Throughout the centuries, It would kill a lot of people out of sadism.
- Tricked Georgie with his paper boat and biting his arm off.
- It pretends to save a gay man from drowning only to devour his heart in front of his boyfriend.
- It kills a young girl after "promising" to remove her embarrassing birthmark.
- It taunts Bill over his inability to save Georgie while making him relive the horrific event by killing another boy in front of him.
- This incarnation of It outdoes the original and 1990 versions in sheer depravity, with its heinous crimes. And unlike those versions, this It isn't even intelligent or charismatic, meaning that it can't really be respected by the audience.
- Even if it has comedic moments as Pennywise, they don't make its character any more endearing to the audience. They only make it creepier with the surprisingly horrid portrayal of its crimes, which means it is to be taken seriously.
- Overall, it has no redeeming qualities whatsoever and is made to be reviled and feared as much as possible.
Trivia[]
