Doctor Jürgen Voller, later known under the cover identity of Professor Schmidt, is the main antagonist of the 2023 action-adventure film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which is the fifth and final instalment of the Indiana Jones film series.
He is an ex-Nazi Party official recruited by the NASA to assist in the Apollo program after the conclusion of World War II. He also desires to obtain the Dial of Destiny so he can transform the world into his, aiming to travel back to the Nazi Germany era to overthrow Adolf Hitler. He is the final archenemy of Indiana Jones.
He is portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He served the Nazis during World War II, making the V-1 rockets for them as an example, and became a Neo-Nazi later on, which already makes him a detestable person to begin with.
- Like all Nazis, he is a racist, as he mistreats a black bellhop at the hotel where he was living, telling him to go back to his own country and refusing to acknowledge that said bellhop was born and raised in New York.
- He partook in Colonel Weber's loot during World War II's last days in 1944, retrieving what he believes to be the Lance of Longinus.
- He threatened to shoot Indiana Jones and Basil Shaw to take the Dial back, under the pretext that it was his.
- He gleefully accepted to defect for the United States of America's government when they offered him a job at the NASA and its Apollo program, laying low for a while and helping them beat out the Soviet Union in the Space Race by giving them a hand in the Apollo 11 mission.
- When a kind African American person brings him his breakfast likely, Voller intimidates the innocent person because of his ethnicity, asking him about his home country and taunting him that America didn't win World War II but Hitler lost it, making this one of the few explicit racism examples in the franchise.
- He sends Agent Mason of the CIA and his henchmen after Jones and Basil's daughter Helena in order to stop them from completing or selling the Dial of Destiny.
- He tries to find the Dial of Destiny himself so he can rewrite reality to his whim, wishing to restore Nazi Germany's glory in accordance to his opinion on Hitler's flaws and mistakes.
- He cowardly escapes in his own Mercedes-Benz through Morocco's streets, forcing Indy, Basil's daughter Helena and her ward Teddy Kumar to use tuk-tuks to chase him and endanger most of the city's inhabitants walking the streets, killing at least 3 civilians.
- Once called out by Mason for his actions and told that the President of the United States is disowning him, Voller orders Klaber and Hauke to kill all of the plane's crew. He also kills all of Renaldo's crew and then shoots Renaldo dead when Indy declines to help him, even though Renaldo was merely armed with a cane and didn't pose a serious threat.
- He kidnaps Teddy Kumar (a child) to use him as a hostage for Indy and Helena to guide him to Archimedes' Tomb.
- He lets Hauke die without even trying to save him.
- He shoots Indy and forces him to come with him, before cruelly telling him that if he doesn't surrender, he will kill Helena and Teddy, mockingly remarking that he has already lost his son in the Vietnam War and that his wife Marion Ravenwood no longer wishes to see him, which does nothing but lower Indy's self-confidence to the point he depresses himself and loses all hope during the film's climax. This makes Voller a psychological abuser who doesn't care about the emotions of others, showing his complete lack of empathy.
- He changes into his SS uniform for no reason other than to flaunt his beliefs.
- He takes Indy hostage at his plane, revealing his plans to actually time travel back to August 1939 and kill Hitler prior to invading Poland and starting World War II, which is a plot that would have culminated again with immense amounts of death if not more than originally.
- Initially, he ignores Indy when he tries to warn him that his plans aren't going to work as Archimedes didn't know about the continental drift. Even when Voller seems to get it, he still doesn't care.
- He lets Klaber and his men shoot at the Roman and Greek ships during the Siege of Syracuse as he harshly orders his pilots fly back into the time fissure that brought them there.
- In his last moments, he tried to manipulate Indy into giving him the parachute he is going to use to escape with Helena to ensure he survives and they both die.
- Despite being one of the most evil and unlikeable Big Bads in film series, he also has one of the least painful deaths of all Indiana Jones villains.
