Jafar is the main antagonist of the 2019 musical fantasy film Aladdin, the live-action remake of the 1992 animated feature film of the same name.
He is the power-hungry Grand Vizier of Agrabah who plots to become Sultan and destroy the nearby kingdom of Shirabad by acquiring the lamp containing the Genie. He is also based off his original incarnation with the same name; however, he lacks his original's charm.
He is portrayed by Marwan Kenzari.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Unlike the original Jafar, this version of Jafar is taken much more seriously and lacks any redeeming qualities or likeability that made the original Jafar a fan favorite save for a few "Evil are Cool" moments.
- While his animated counterpart obviously had no more respect for women's rights than would have been typical for his time, he spends a good deal of time in this version reminding Jasmine of her "place" and that women should be "seen and not heard" showing he is sexist.
- He kicked a jailer down a well solely for saying (as a compliment) that he's already the second most powerful person in Agrabah next to the Sultan.
- He hypnotized The Sultan and wanted him to declare war on Shirabad.
- He manipulated Aladdin to get the lamp from the cave of wonders, and when Aladdin got it, Jafar took the lamp and left Aladdin to die in the cave.
- He pushed Aladdin off the roof and let him drown in the water.
- He abuses genie's powers once he wishes to become both the Sultan and the most powerful sorcerer.
- After usurping the throne and becoming a powerful sorcerer, he banishes Aladdin to a ice wasteland to freeze to death.
- He painfully tortured the Sultan and Dalia to force Princess Jasmine to marry him simply to spite the Sultan by taking what he cares about the most from him.
- After he became a genie, he planed to destroy Shirabad once and for all.
- He also lacks the friendship and relationship with Iago, and isn't seen joking around with him, and instead more of a pet than a partner in crime or a right-hand and not caring for him at all.
- When he was about to be trapped in the lamp, he vowed revenge against Aladdin saying that he'll never forget what he did to him.
- Unlike the original movie, where Jafar unknowingly dragged Iago along with him, instinctively reaching for something to hold onto without realizing he had grabbed Iago's tail until it was too late. However, this version of Jafar deliberately takes hold of Iago, dragging him with to share in a punishment lago does not deserve since he has been no-ware as horrible as Jafar. This seems driven by spite, in response to Iago's attempt to escape.
- His fate worse than death, is very satisfying and not played for sympathy.
Trivia[]
- Some fans theorize that he may have killed Jasmine's mother in the past. If this confirmed, it would make him far worse.
- This is the evilest depiction of Jafar and the only version of him being a Hate Sink.
