Jebediah Springfield is a posthumous overarching antagonist of the animated series The Simpsons. He was the founder of the city of Springfield, and although widely regarded as a hero by its citizens, he was actually a vicious pirate, as revealed in the episode "Lisa the Iconoclast".
He was voiced by Harry Shearer.
What Makes Him A Hate Sink?[]
- On the surface, he’s the hero in which Springfield is named after. But Lisa uncovers the horrible truth behind him.
- In reality, Jebediah Springfield was a murderous criminal, one of the most evil people in the 18th century. He actually killed a tamed buffalo rather than tame a wild one, and had mounted its head on his wall.
- He committed treason by attempting to assassinate George Washington.
- He makes it clear that he has no regrets in life for his actions, and taunts Springfield by claiming that they will never figure out the truth. In addition, he is portrayed completely seriously, as opposed to other Simpsons villains.
- It’s implied that part of the reason Lisa decides not to tell the truth about Jebediah Springfield is because of the panic it would bring to the town he is named after.
Trivia[]
- His Tapped Out counterpart doesn’t count, as he actually felt remorse for his actions. However, canon Jebediah Springfield does not.
- Jebediah Springfield, alongside Ms. Cantwell, The Kindergarten Teacher, Ms. Kelp, Cesar and Ugolin, and Judge Constance Harm are the only Simpsons characters to be considered as Hate Sinks.
