"Here's what a real bad day looks like!" |
“ | Jenner, I fear, may do her harm. He is consumed by a lust for power. Thus far, the amulet has remained safely hidden. But if he finds it, heaven help us. | „ |
~ Nicodemus |
Jenner is the main antagonist of Don Bluth's 1982 animated film The Secret of NIMH by MGM, which is based on the 1971 children's book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by the late Robert C. O'Brien. It is based on the novel's character of the same name.
He was voiced by the late Paul Shenar, who also played Alejandro Sosa in the 1983 Scarface remake.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He believes the meaning of life is to be as much of a taker as is possible.
- Right away when he is first introduced ranting against the plan to evacuate to Thorn Valley, the audience can tell that he is unstable. Even Mrs. Brisby is unnerved by his behavior.
- Though he seems to agree to help move the Brisby home, it is actually a setup to kill Nicodemus in the process and succeed him as leader of the rats, with no regard for the children inside.
- When Mrs. Brisby warns the rats of exterminators coming to look at the thorn bush in the morning, Jenner tells everyone not to listen to her and projects his insanity onto her, refusing to take her warning seriously despite having every reason to.
- He was the one who taught the rats to steal from humans. Justin calls him out on the fact that he has clearly learned nothing.
- He tries to kill anyone who stands in his way, brutally injuring Justin and killing his own confidant Sullivan.
- His plan to stay in the thorn bush is completely idiotic, as it would mean the end for all of the rats as sooner or later they would've been found out by the humans and killed.
Trivia[]
- Jenner's depiction in the book series cannot be considered a hate sink, as the worst thing he does is betray Nicodemus by choosing to stay on a human farm. In the sequel, he has become a stern but caring father to his children, shows remorse for his past, and sacrifices himself to save his son Rasco.
