“ | I didn't join the First Sons for the betterment of mankind; I joined them because I want powers! God has a purpose for me, that I might better myself and use my gifts in his name. Besides, I'm tired of waiting. I've already assembled the prisoners, the Ray Sphere. It's already in motion. Tonight, I will become the sword of God. | „ |
~ Bertrand's final speech before becoming a Conduit. |
“ | Cole: Ahh...I finally get it. Oh, you thought the Ray Sphere was gonna turn you into some sorta shiny superhuman, but instead it turned you into a fifty-foot maggot. Bertrand: Cole...don't press me. If I turn into that thing again...oh, there will be blood on both our hands. Cole: Blood? You're the one trying to trick humanity into killing anybody with a power. Bertrand: Conduits are not part of the divine plan! They are a product of science, fueled by...by Man's greed and the whispering of the Devil in our ears, Cole! Cole: See that's where you're wrong, Bertrand. Conduits aren't monsters. No, see powers don't kill people. Oh no. It's the person behind the powers, that kill people. Bertrand: That's right. |

~ Bertrand's last exchange with Cole MacGrath before his death. |
Joseph Bertrand III, also known as The Behemoth in his corrupted form, is one of the two main antagonists of the 2011 game inFAMOUS 2, alongside the Beast. He is the leader of the New Marais section of the First Sons, leader of the Milita, and creator of the Corrupted. An insanely fanatical man, Bertrand's ultimate goal is to destroy all Conduits based on the fact that his ability is to turn into a monster.
He was voiced by Graham McTavish.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- In the past, he killed dozens of prostitutes and swamp-dwellers in order to activate the Ray Sphere and give himself powers, including Nix's family as she tragically watched from behind a bush. As a result, Nix gained napalm powers and then became somewhat sociopathic as an adult due to her PTSD.
- He conducts unethical experimentation on Lucy Kuo, draining all of her blood and replacing it with an unknown substance to give her ice powers.
- He painfully transformed countless New Marais citizens into uncontrollable, man-eating insectoids called the Corrupted in order to win the town's respect.
- He plans to sell forced Conduits to rich warlords around the world, hoping to kickstart a genocide by scaring humanity into hating and killing anyone with a power. This plan would've undoubtedly started World War III if successful.
- He's a massive hypocrite who hates Conduits despite being a Conduit himself, and all he's doing is mirroring himself by calling them undivine demons bred by science and Man's greed. Cole also suggests in-universe that Bertrand only hates Conduits out of petty envy that he didn't get the powers he'd hoped for when he activated the Ray Sphere, becoming a 50-foot maggot instead of a shiny superhuman.
- Overall, he's hands down the biggest monster (both literally and figuratively) in the entire series, to the point where Nix spits on his corpse after Cole kills him. Even Kessler, despite being just as heinous and even working alongside Bertrand, is an anti-villain who loved his late wife and kids and wants to atone for his mistake of not saving humanity from the Beast, who himself is also an anti-villain who wants to save as many Conduits as he can from the plague even if it kills all humans in the process.
