~ Josh meeting Megan online. |
"Josh" is the unseen main antagonist of the 2011 found-footage horror film Megan Is Missing. He is the abductor, torturer, and rapist of Megan Stewart and Amy Herman.
He was portrayed by Dean Waite.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Seducing the 14-year-old Megan Stewart into meeting him behind a diner so he can take her to his dungeon, sexually torturing her before posting photos of it to a fetish site as if he was doing nothing wrong. He then killed Megan not too long afterwards, and took off her clothes.
- It's confirmed that the real "Josh" is the boy in his profile picture, which he probably killed and stole his identity, therefore his real name is never revealed.
- In addition, while the murder of the real Josh was off-screen, it still had onscreen effects and it doesn't detract from his Hate Sink status.
- Kidnapping Megan's best friend Amy Herman, who's also 14, under a bridge so that he can torture her in the aforementioned dungeon as well, splashing her near-nude body with water and force-feeding her dog food before raping her on camera.
- The movie ends with him stuffing Amy into a barrel with Megan's rotting corpse and then burying it in the forest, leaving her to die and thus facing zero comeuppance for his actions (though he was under police investigation, at least, but he still gets away with his actions and remains at large since then) and it is implied that he will commit similar crimes in the future. And given both the FBI and the police's ineffectiveness of failing to stop Josh along with not providing Amy any sort of witness protection, its clear that Josh has 100% gotten away with his crimes alogether.
- Overall, he represents the true horrors of sexual online predators in the real world, which makes him all the more believable.
Trivia[]
- Josh has been criticized because some members of the audience feel like they go too far with the character when the movie tries to warn people that being online can be dangerous. He is not necessarily unrealistic though.
