Judge Turpin is the main antagonist of the 1979 musical Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street along with the 2007 live-action film of the same name. He is a perverted and corrupt judge who incriminated Benjamin Barker and was responsible for the events of the story, being the reason why Benjamin would become the serial killer he is currently.
He was played by the late Alan Rickman.
What Makes Him Despicable[]
- Upon witnessing Benjamin Barker's wife, Lucy, Turpin incriminated Benjamin, causing the latter to be taken away to prison and be forced to work prison labor for years in order to go after his wife.
- After inviting Lucy to a party under the guise of an attempt to cheer her up after her husband had been taken away, Turpin proceeded to rape her there after she got drunk, which would cause her to attempt suicide in the aftermath.
- Afterwards, he would take Johanna for himself and keep her in his house as his ward for years.
- He would develop pedophilic feelings for Johanna over the years to the point of stalking her in her room through the peephole.
- He sentenced a young boy to be hanged to death in spite of not getting any evidence for his crimes, not caring that he could have executed a potentially innocent child.
- When he spotted Anthony watching his daughter, he pretended to invite him into his house for a nice little talk only to have Beadle Bamford take him outside and beat him up (in the play, he has him kill his pet bird) to keep him away from Johanna.
- When he caught Johanna attempting to escape him, Turpin had Bamford send her to Jonas Fogg's asylum and had her kept there until she agreed to marry him, even though she was decades younger than him.
- Overall, he is the main reason why Benjamin Barker would turn into the serial killer he would become later on in the story as the latter would be motivated with revenge against him for ruining his life and family.
