Junya Kaneshiro is a major antagonist in Persona 5, being the main antagonist of the game's third arc. He is a mafia boss, ruling over the underworld of Shibuya, who blackmails students of Shujin High into smuggling drugs. Because of his sheer greediness, he spawned a Palace in the Metaverse, which is the Bank of Gluttony. He is the only Palace Ruler who doesn't need a Good Publicity.
He was voiced in Japanese by the late Kazunari Tanaka in the original game, and by Takahiro Fujimoto in Royal and the anime adaptation. In English, he was voiced by Jalen K. Cassell. In the stage play adaptation, he is portrayed by Yuya Miyashita.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Blackmailed students of Shujin Academy into smuggling drugs.
- Kidnapped and tried to rape Makoto Niijima.
- Put multiple teenagers into 3,000,000 yen worth of debt for no reason other than to satiate his own greed.
- Threatened to turn Makoto Niijima and her sister Sae into sex slaves.
- Even after being defeated, his Shadow form still acted smug towards the Phantom Thieves.
- He funded Masayoshi Shido's campaign. using the money he made via drug trafficking.
- While he is somewhat insecure about his weight and grew up poor, this isn't really played with sympathy, leaving Kaneshiro with no redeeming qualities.
- Unlike Kunikazu Okumura, who at least had actual goals beyond just money, Kaneshiro just tried to acquire more and more money for no real purpose, despite already being unbelievably wealthy.
Trivia[]
- Both Junya Kaneshiro and Principal Kobayakawa are Persona 5 Hate Sinks who were corpulent. Coincidentally, they were both involved in Antisocial Force to fund Shido's campaign and being plot-driving antagonists in Makoto Niijima's Character Arc.
