Sekiya: Hmph! Cry all you want, you brats!!

Classroom: It hurts...! I want my mom!
Sekiya: Cry, cry, CRY! You always made fun of me because I was a deliveryman! Every day I made my deliveries I had to take shit from you and your teachers! Now the school is mine! You can call me Mr. Sekiya, Sir!

~ Sekiya after threatening a classroom full of kids to give him their food.

Kyusaku Sekiya, more commonly referred to as Mr. Sekiya, is the main antagonist of the late Kazuo Umezu's manga The Drifting Classroom.

He was once a cafeteria worker at the titular school who went insane following the school being trasported to a wasteland in the future. After overhearing some teachers talking about there being a nuclear war, and out of a grudge for the rest of the staff viewing him in a negative light, he decided to hoard all of the cafeteria's food to have all of the children and staff starve to death. Throughout the course of the story, after Mr. Wakahama had killed all of the adults that have been transported, Sekiya becomes more of a selfish and viscious tyrant, viewing the children as beasts that can easily be exploited, and is seen killing and/or beating up numerous students and staff members.

What Makes him a Hate Sink?[]

  • Although some characters state that Sekiya was popular amongst the children and was friendly towards them, Sekiya also vents his true feelings about his job on multiple ocassions, telling the children that he had to put up with being made fun of for his position. He also sees this as a reason for why he should take over the school and abuse the children.
    • As an extension of this justification, Sekiya also states that all children are "beasts", in contrast to adults, who are "human". He once again sees this as a justification to abuse his power, as he is the only remaining adult in the group after Mr. Wakahara had killed all of the other staff members.
  • When he is introduced, the first thing he does is hit a kid with a broom when they try to take some bread from the cafeteria, and smack Sho.
  • After he chases off the kids, Sekiya takes one of them hostage and threatens to kill them.
  • When the staff members try to get into the kitchen themselves, he pours a flammable liquid on the floor, which seeps through the door. Sekiya then sets fire to it, and injures all of the staff members.
  • When Hata sneaks into the kitchen to save the kid that Sekiya held hostage, Sekiya proceeds to stab him in the back, killing him. Afterwads, he picks up a gun that he was trying to use on Sekiya, and chases the other kids down with it.
  • Sekiya goes up to a classroom, and threatens to kill all of the kids inside of it if they don't give him their food. This scares all of the children, to the point where some of them cry. Sekiya's response to this is to tell them to cry some more.
  • Sekiya orders to be called "Mr. Sekiya" to mark his dominance over the entire school, and stomps on one kid's hands to force him to call him that. Despite following his orders, Sekiya calls the kid an "ass-kisser", and steps on them even harder.
  • Some time after being locked up, Sekiya takes advantage of a child who is walking by his locker, who gives him some instant ramen. He lies to him that he needs a piece of wire to pick the food out of his teeth, but actually uses it to escape. He kicks the child, and tosses the ramen in his face.
  • Sekiya abducts Yu, and threatens to kill him if the other students don't follow his orders.
  • Sekiya takes a select group of students to the recently announced forest, and forces Sho to eat a piece of fruit, even though they don't know if it's safe to eat.
  • When the group hears a rustling noise in the forest, Sekiya decides to toss Yu towards the creature that made the sound to locate it, which Sho calls him out for.
  • Sekiya attempts to murder one of the students by suffocating him in the ground, and when Sho intervenes, Sekiya tosses him across the forest, which grabs the creature's attention.
  • Sekiya tosses Sho's unconcious body towards the creature in order to distract it and run away.
  • For a while after escaping the forest, Sekiya is so traumatized by the event that he becomes mentally insane. When he falls down the stairs, he gets back to his senses, and pretends to still be insane in order to catch the other students off guard.
  • Sekiya forces one of the students to eat a strange mushroom, which the students were heisitent to eat prior due to them killing all of their plants. The student then starts transforming into one of the Future Humans afterwards.
  • Sekiya takes over the entire school, and forces Sho and a few other children to dig a well, despite clear evidence that there is little to no water left on Earth. Along with this, he inflicts brutal punishments on the children if they don't follow his orders, justifying them with the times that he was at war himself.
  • When the Future Humans start invading the school, Sekiya ditches all of the students, and takes all of the school's remaining food with him. This, combined with the Princess telling the school about a "paradise" in Mt. Fuji, make all of the students desperate enough to resort to cannibalism when they find there is no edible food at the "paradise".
  • Sekiya comes back to the school as the students attempt to go back to the present. Realizing that he is in fact in the future, he tries to murder Yu, who all of the kids agreed to send back after promising he'll prevent the deserted wasteland in the first place. He would have done this had the arm of the thief in the first volume, which got transferred along with the school not intervened and strangled Sekiya to death.
