Lance is a secondary antagonist in the Gone series books Hunger, Lies, and Plague, and is the second-in-command to both its leaders Zil Sperry and Turk. He joined in its formation after Zil Sperry blamed Hunter Leftkowitz, a child with powers, for the death of his friend Harry.

Despite never becoming the leader, he has a significant role in the many crimes they committed by being the negative influence on both Zil and Turk, especially Turk, who could basically have been considered a puppet leader at that point.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • He joined the Human Crew in their crusade to kill all children with powers, taking part in their numerous atrocities, like the attempted lynching of Hunter and the setting of the Perdido Beach fire.
  • He is shown egging Zil on to continue committing crimes whenever he displays any reluctance to do so.
  • He convinced the rest of the Human Crew to help him get revenge on Albert Hillsborough for giving them the relatively light punishment of having to dig trenches for starting the Perdido Beach fire.
  • He urged Turk to shoot Albert in the head when Turk initially only wanted to humiliate him.
  • He got in a Mexican standoff with Edilio Escobar, aiming his gun at the 4-year-old Little Pete.
  • He attempted to kidnap Little Pete and place him into a cruel form of slavery involving starving and dehydrating him so he could abuse his ability to create food and water.
  • He showed his true cowardly nature when he screamed and begged for mercy after Edilio shot him.
  • He doesn't even believe in the Human Crew's causes outside of their xenophobia and just hates people different from himself as opposed to having powers independently. This is proven by the blatant racism he shows in Plague.
  • While he acts nice toward his fellow Human Crew members, it is all a facade as he is unfazed by the deaths of Hank, Antoine, and Zil. He also blamed the attack on Albert entirely on Turk after being defeated by Edilio.
  • He is such a horrible person that Edilio, one of the most morally unbreakable characters in the series, considered killing him at one point.
  • Although Zil Sperry is generally more hated by the fandom, this is likely only because he’s more prominent in the Human Crew's crimes and is given greater characterisation. Lance has all the terrible personality traits of Zil while lacking any of the complexities or insecurities that prevent Zil from being a hate sink, and also having the added bonus of being a racist.
  • His brutal death of being dropped from several feet by Caine Soren was played for satisfaction.
