~ Lotso insulting Woody while trying to leave the latter and his friends to their deaths. |
Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear, commonly referred to as Lotso, is the main antagonist of the animated Pixar film Toy Story 3.
He is a large, evil, pink, anthropomorphic, strawberry-scented teddy bear who used to rule Sunnyside Daycare like a prison with the help of his former minions - Ken, Big Baby, Stretch, Sparks, Chunk, Twitch, the Bookworm, and the Monkey. Ultimately, Lotso's reign of terror ended when, during Andy's toys' attempt to escape, they got into a confrontation, during which Woody revealed the extent of Lotso's true nature, which caused the other toys, including Big Baby, to turn on him.
He was voiced by the late Ned Beatty, who also voiced Tortoise John in Rango.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- While originally having a planned redemption, the writers of Toy Story 3 decided to scrap said redemption in exchange for making Lotso more hateable by completely deconstructing his tragedy and explaining why it didn't hold up and having him pull his infamous Moral Event Horizon by betraying the toys who had just helped him and leaving them to die in the incinerator.
- While Lotso was a nice person who used to care for his friends, he would throw away all his redeeming qualities after being accidentally abandoned by his owner Daisy, becoming a cruel and misanthropic toy.
- He's shown to be abusive and manipulative towards others, including his own allies, with him calling them dummies, having the Chatter Telephone beat until he told them where Woody and the other toys were, insulting Big Baby for missing his mother and smashing the Pendant that Daisy had given him, and even heartlessly throwing Ken over to the Toy's side when he decides to go against him.
- He's one of the more personally despicable villains with how he resets Buzz's programming, turning him back into a naïve space ranger and having him beat the other toys, all with a sadistic smirk of satisfaction.
- Just before leaving to The Butterfly Room, he manipulated Buzz and his friends into when before realizing his true colors and The Caterpillar Room into staying here forever making them thinking Andy "doesn't care about them anymore", causing a huge hypocrite argument between Woody and his friends, causing him to turn against them and leaving without them, among going to Bonnie's house, he discovered the shocking and disturbing truth about Lotso exposing a disturbing information about him via Chuckles and Bonnie's toys.
- He threw his own minion Ken towards Woody and the gang in a disrespectful way when being held by Stretch at the trash container after he turned against him.
- His defeat was played for satisfaction, as he was tied up in the front garbage truck with some toys, while he’s panicking and they told him to close his mouth, so he doesn’t get bugs and mud in it, which he does while they laugh at him.
- By the end of the film, he is shown absolutely no sympathy by any of the characters, is loathed by the narrative, and the toys at Sunnyside Daycare are shown to be better off without him.
- None of the franchise's main antagonists in its films before and after him, have ever reached his levels of inherent cruelty.
- Sid Phillips is merely a child who previously had a habit of destroying toys, not knowing at first that they were sentient.
- Al McWhiggin may have stolen Woody, but he also made sure that the entire Roundup Gang are in mint condition by the time they were shipped to Japan.
- Stinky Pete has never been played with any human child in his life as a toy, so he thought that being in display at Japan would be his chance to be loved.
- Gabby Gabby simply wanted to become an owned toy herself with any human child, and whether or not it succeeds or fails, she's more than willing to leave others alone.
- Zurg from Lightyear, who is really a future Buzz Lightyear, has wished to take back the time he caused his crew to be lost from him.
Trivia[]
- Although Lotso was meant to be despised, some fans still felt sorry for him due to his backstory. As such some view him as an Unintentionally Sympathetic Hate Sink. In that regard, Lotso is an example of a Hate Sink with a complex and even tragic side but is otherwise despicable due to his actions and behavior.
- Despite this, the filmmakers said they decided not to have Lotso die in the incinerator as they felt that was too horrible a punishment even for him, so they opted to give him a more comedic comeuppance.
- His original script's counterpart doesn't qualify as a Hate Sink because this version of him is tragic.
