Hanging here in these chains, she came to realize that I was her only way out. It wasn't long before she made her way from this dungeon... to my bed.
~ Magnus

Magnus is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Dante) of the AMC series Into the Badlands.

He is the current leader of the ancient cult the Black Lotus, an organization dedicated to eradicating Dark Ones from the world. Years ago, Magnus found the secret city of Azra, and led an invasion that destroyed the city completely. Following this, Magnus dedicated himself to killing the last remaining children of the golden city, Sunny and Pilgrim.

He was portrayed by Francis Magee. His younger self was portrayed by Fergus Mulligan.

What Makes Him Hated?[]

  • He joined the Black Lotus, an organization with a noble goal of protecting humanity from Dark Ones, but he did it for his own selfish reasons, often being needlessly sadistic and killing innocent people who don't even possess the Gift.
  • He worked as a scribe for the Abbot Monastery for years and gained the trust of Ankara to the point that she saw him as a son, but he was merely manipulating her into helping him find Azra.
  • Once he and Ankara finally found the golden city, he poisoned her wine and left her for dead so he could sneak into the city.
  • When he and two other Black Lotus members were caught by Dante and questioned on how they got into Azra, they refused to speak. Dante would then kill the other two members and leave Magnus alive, giving him a limited time to give answers before he is executed as well. When Sanzō, the son of Dante confronts Magnus in his prison cell, Magnus tells Sanzō of his fathers plan to destroy the rest of the world so that Dark Ones may rule. While at first this seems like Magnus actually trying to help Sanzō, the moment Sanzō frees him Magnus proceeds to put a knife to his throat and threaten to kill him in order to escape the island, proving any empathy or genuine morality he had to be false.
  • After escaping the island he reported back to the Black Lotus and led an invasion of Azra which saw the deaths of everyone in the city barring Sanzō, Kannin, and Taurin.
  • He and fellow Black Lotus members attacked a cargo ship carrying Sanzō, Kannin, and Taurin and killed everyone on board in order to reach the children.
  • While Sanzō and Taurin manage to escape, Kannin is captured by the Black Lotus. Rather than kill her like with every other Dark One, Magnus decided to build a rig that would suspend her in the air and inflict serious pain onto her in order to mentally break her into a mindless weapon for the cult.
  • He only let Kannin out of the rig once she started acting as his sex slave, and it's made even worse by the fact that she was a teenager when he captured her.
  • Despite Sanzō losing his Gift and becoming the Clipper known as Sunny, as well as Taurin not having the Gift and becoming a false messiah known as Pilgrim, Magnus continued to track them down with the intention to kill them even though they weren't Dark Ones anymore.
  • He eventually tracks down Ankara, Sunny, and Bajie and attacks them using flash grenades, knocking out Sunny and injuring Bajie. He then proceeds to mock Ankara over the fact that she still has led him where he needed to go, and he then proceeds to murder Bajie.
  • When Ankara begins to cry due to Bajie being her former students, Magnus taunts her over the fact that she is sentimental, and proceeds to stab her in the gut.
  • Magnus takes Sunny back the secret Black Lotus hideout Razor Ridge with the intention of breaking him into a mindless weapon against Dark Ones like he did to Kannin.
  • He continuously taunts Sunny over the fact that he killed Bajie and that he turned his sister into a sex slave.
  • Bajie is revived by Ankara with her last bit of energy before she dies, and he proceeds to break into Razor Ridge to save Sunny, but ultimately fails and is captured. Magnus then decides that after Sunny is brainwashed the first thing he will force him to do is kill Bajie.
  • Sunny manages to finally break Kannin out of her brainwashing, at which point Sunny, Kannin, and Bajie manage to escape from Razor Ridge, but after Pilgrim announces his plan to take over the entire Badlands with his army of Dark Ones, Sunny and Bajie decide they need the Black Lotus help in order to stop Pilgrim's conquest. They meet with Magnus and offer a ceasefire between the Black Lotus and the warriors of the Badlands, saying they can worry about killing each other after Pilgrim has been defeated. Magnus says this is a very reasonable compromise, but that he does not believe in compromises and proceeds to attack and try to kill them anyways.
  • While Magnus is dueling Sunny, Kannin arrives to help her brother, and Magnus proceeds to taunt Kannin and says he is going to enjoy breaking her all over again.
  • After Kannin kills Magnus, she breaks down into tears, showing he truly had manipulated her to the point that she cared about him even though he only saw her as a possession.
  • With Magnus dead, the Black Lotus begins to move in a better direction and redeem itself, showing that he truly is the reason for the organization being so unnecessarily sadistic.
