Major Arnold Ernst Toht is the secondary antagonist of the 1981 action-adventure film Raiders of the Lost Ark, the first installment of the Indiana Jones franchise.
He was a sadistic Nazi Gestapo agent who's tasked to aid Colonel Herman Dietrich and Dr. René Belloq to find the Ark of the Covenant for Adolf Hitler, despite his skepticism.
He was portrayed by the late Ronald Lacey.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- It is implied that he tortured many people in the past, as seen when he claimed he was "used to it" to Marion Ravenwood, whom he was going to torture.
- He intends to torture Marion by scorching her with a flaming poker while interrogating her.
- He orders Otto to shoot one of his own henchmen along with Indy, showing that he is a Bad Boss who shows no care for his own subordinates.
- He sadistically throws Marion into the Well of Souls, leaving her to die in there with Indiana Jones, and he sadistically chuckles to himself.
- His death via having his face melted off isn't treated with sympathy given how ruthless and sadistic he was (and also the fact that he's a freaking Nazi).
- Although he has a few comedic moments that detract from his villainy, such as him squeamishly running out of Marion’s bar after burning his hand and trying to cool it off in the snow, and when he interrogates Marion by pulling out what appeared to be nunchucks, only to reveal it to be a coat hanger, they don't make his character more endearing to the audience as he is an irredeemable sadist who loves to inflict pain on others.
- Overall, of all of the villains in the film, he has no redeeming qualities whatsoever and exists to be completely despised by the audience as a remorseless and sadistic psychopath, unlike the main villain, Belloq, who is affable and has some humanizing moments, and even fellow Nazi Dietrich is more likeable in comparison.
