Major Man is a minor character in The Powerpuff Girls, he is the main antagonist of the episode "Major Competition".
He was voiced by Jeff Bennett, who also voiced Mike Brikowski and Dick Hardly in the same series, the Huntsman in American Dragon: Jake Long and Bendy in Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is a charlatan superhero who stages crimes and disasters so he can save the day and gain admiration and glory as a hero.
- He shows no real concern for the lives he endangers through his staged heroics, which include setting the city of Townsville on fire, breaking the train tracks, and kicking a puppy into the street.
- It appears that he has actual superpowers; he can fly so fast he can breach Earth's atmosphere in seconds, breathe in space, lift a train without straining himself, blow hard enough to put out giant fires that have engulfed entire cities, and he has laser vision. This means he could have easily been a legitimate superhero, but he's a lazy glory seeking coward who stages crimes and disasters instead of thwarting real ones.
- He usurps the girls of their role as Townsville's heroes, to the point that the people of Townsville forget about them and the Mayor replaces the Powerpuff hotline with a Major Man hotline. He shows no remorse or sympathy for the girls when they feel like they are being forgotten and overlooked. In fact, when the Mayor initially feels bad about getting rid of the Powerpuff hotline, Major Man makes him forget about it and move on like it isn't a big deal.
- His character model is a reskin of another Cartoon Network character; Johnny Bravo. He looks like Johnny Bravo if he got a tan, removed his sunglasses, and put on a red, white, and blue superhero costume. They are even voiced by the same person. However, whereas Johnny is a narcissistic womanizer but does have a good heart underneath, Major Man is a selfish, cowardly glory hound with no good traits. He basically represents Johnny without any of his good traits.
- He makes one liners that the girls mock as being corny. This shows that even before his true nature was revealed, the audience was supposed to find him corny.
- Although he wears red, white, and blue and calls himself Major Man, he is really a disgrace to patriots everywhere. He kicks puppies, usurps the spotlight from true heroes, and causes disasters to make himself look like a hero because he's too cowardly and lazy to go up against real villains and monsters. The narrator even doubts he was a real army major and he isn't wrong about that one bit.
- He's fairly stupid:
- He slips up and admits on the news that the Mayor would never be able to get to crime scenes as fast as him, saying "You'd have to know about it in advance like I do". This is what first makes the girls suspect that there's something fishy about him. This is a major act of idiocy. even the Mayor (typically portrayed as childish and unintelligent) notices this and almost suspects something before Major Man distracts him. It's only through plot armor that nobody else catches this slip up.
- He almost repeats the above mistake when the Mayor calls him to take care of a giant monster attacking Townsville, stating "Impossible! I didn't set up for any-" before being cut off.
- Even if the girls hadn't caught onto him, there eventually would be a legitimate monster or villain. If he did any research, he would know that Townsville is constantly attacked by supervillains and monsters. It was only a matter of time before his charade was revealed.
- He is completely unable to defeat Fred, the giant monster attacking Townsville (actually a friend of the girls who agreed to help them expose Major Man as the phony he is). This also suggests that despite being superhuman, he is rather weak compared to the girls, as Fred wasn't even trying to seriously injure or kill him.
- He cowardly begs for help and admits to being a fraud so the girls will save him.
- His defeat is played for satisfaction as he is exposed and leaves Townsville humiliated for what he's done.
