| ~ Makunga explaining about why he wants to be Alpha Lion – his most famous quote. |
Makunga is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Nana) of of DreamWorks' 17th full-length animated feature film, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, the second installment of the Madagascar franchise.
He is a power-hungry lion who seeks to overthrow his arch-rival Zuba and become the new Alpha Lion. However, such plan of his would be challenged with the arrival of Zuba's long-lost son, Alakay/Alex. He is also Teetsi's boss, as well as Zuba and Alex's arch-nemesis.
He was voiced by Alec Baldwin, who also played Larry Quinn in The Cat in the Hat.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He was rude to Zuba while Zuba was playing with Alex and says that he wants to kicked him out and was the main responsible that got Alex away from Zuba, by poachers who wanted to kill Alex for money and Alex only surviving as the crate he was being carried in fell down of the car and into river completely starting the Madagascar franchise's events.
- While he was happy to see Alex, Teetsi says why and Makunga says that he can resume his plan to get rid of Zuba.
- He tricked Alex to do a dance in front of Teetsi instead of fighting so he can humiliate Alex, which succeeded as Zuba was embarrassed by his son's defeat. What makes this even worse is that Teetsi is a massive giant hulk like Lion who could have even killed Alex.
- When he became a leader he was a massive jerk towards everyone acting like if he's king of the world.
- He is an incompetent parody of Scar, the main antagonist of The Lion King.
- Makunga serves as Alex's dark reflection. Both are selfish and neglectful towards the start, with Alex caring only about his own image than his own best friend Marty's feelings. However, he does eventually realize his mistakes and during the events of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, proven by the fact that he has acknowledged that he was not a very good friend to Marty even before they left New York. Instead, he decided to pay more attention to his other friends' feelings rather than how everything that's fame-related affects him. Makunga, on the other hand, is an egotistical jerk who cares only about himself and not any of the animals he had ruled over. Makunga is an example of what Alex would've become if he let his selfish personality get the better of him, and hadn't learn that his friends are important to him.
- His defeat with Nana beating the stuffing out of him is played for absolute laughs and satisfaction. What makes this even more funny as unlike Alex, Makunga didn't fight back at all and instead just pathetically took it.
- It's also revealed by the DVD commentary that Nana dragged him back to New York and put him in a kitty cage. While it's implied that he will suffer a fate worse than death with Nana mistreating him for the rest of his life, it's not done for sympathy as he downright deserved it for his abusive nature.
