Mamoru Andou is a minor antagonist from the manga series Gambling Apocalyse Kaiji.
Kaiji Itou, who knew nothing of Mamoru Andou's true character, selected him to be a part of his group because Mamoru Andou fulfilled certain desirable conditions. Andou proved to be an terrible ally, as he was unable to come up with his own plans and relied on Kaiji to make any sorts of progress, and he eventually ended up betraying Kaiji. Even before his villainy is revealed, he is still a hate sink because of his unlikeable personality.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Upon joining Kaiji's group, he immediately puts the group in danger with his poor decision-making and incompetence. Furthermore, it is likely that he intended to abandon the group had his plan worked out.
- Cries and whines when he's called out on his lying, and generally has a pathetic demeanor.
- Despite the fact that he had to rely solely on Kaiji's decision-making in order to win, and despite the fact that he was aware that the punishment for losing on the Espoir involves torture and forced labor (with a particularly high mortality rate to boot), he still betrays Kaiji, and even laughs while doing it too.
- He also convinces Furuhata to betray Kaiji too.
- Though he is not the first villain to betray the protagonist, his betrayal is the first instance of betrayal that can be considered particularly despicable due to his lack of hesitation, shame, and remorse, and also due to the fact that he had the means to save Kaiji while still winning the game, but chose betrayal anyways.
- After his betrayal attempt is unsuccessful, he lies and says he was possessed instead of owning up to his actions. Then, after Kaiji takes the group's money, he and Furuhata insist that Kaiji is being "too cruel" and that the money should be split evenly because it's a result of all their efforts (though Andou and Furuhata's efforts were extremely minimal).
- Kaiji, out of the goodness of his heart, ends up spending the group's money to rescue a fellow player. Andou doesn't understand the rationale behind this action and assumes it must be because the player is rich, further revealing Andou's poor character and greediness. Andou then complains about it being a waste of money.
- Even Kaiji, despite being a hero, was furious with Andou to the point where he beat up Andou and called Andou a backstabbing low-life piece of shit.
- It is probably the case that he was intentionally designed to be whiny and overweight so that he would be unlikeable even before he was revealed to be a villain.
- Though Andou and Furuhata essentially commit the same wrongdoings, and one could argue that Furuhata is even worse because he knew Kaiji beforehand and thus had a closer connection to him, most fans still hate Andou much more. This solidifies his status as a Hate Sink.
