ā | Nothing anyone did to her was any different than what happens to every girl at every high school. She just wanted attention. And leaving those tapes... That's a f-cked up thing to do! No one deserves that. | ā |
~ Marcus to Clay regarding Hannahās suicide and the nature of the tapes. |
Marcus Cole (known as Marcus Cooley in the original novel) is a major antagonist in the 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why and its 2017 Netflix adaptation. He is the student body president of Liberty High School and a part of the Baker's Dozen and is the subject of Hannah Baker's 6th tape from her list of reasons why she killed herself.
He was portrayed by Steven Silver.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is by far the least sympathetic member of the Baker's Dozen and the only one to never feel any remorse for his actions. Though it is shown he is pushed by his father to become a good example of a black leader, it is never played with sympathy and nothing indicates he respects his father.
- He spends his time sucking up to Bryce Walker, knowing he is an immoral serial rapist and only uses him for his status to boost himself.
- He is a cowardly loser who runs away from any situation that could inconvenience him.
- Despite claiming to want to run the school in a good way, the is a faƧade behind his egotistical and self-serving ways in which he will do anything to protect his image.
- Wanting to impress Bryce and the other jocks by seeing if he can get Hannah to have sex with him, he purposefully shows up to their date late and tries to rape her in the open and when she refuses, he instead screams he thought she was easy.
- He spends a decent portion of the time threatening Clay if he exposes the tapes, like other subjects.
- He lies in court about his sexual assault on Hannah, refusing to feel any remorse for what he did and blatantly lying that she led him on them changed her mind. He also ruins the trial by saying she was in love with her rapist, Bryce Walker.
- Upon a video of him making out with a girl in the Clubhouse getting leaked, he spends a majority of Season 2 being a butt monkey when Tyler and Cyrus blackmail him and multiple pranks on him, which is played for immense satisfaction.
- He expects to be rewarded for helping out Bryce in the class trial and rudely demands him to help him out of being blackmailed since he owes him a favor.
