An alternate version of Mari serves as the main antagonist of the AO3 fanfiction saga Hands, based on the indie RPG OMORI.
A strict departure from her depiction in the game, her kindness is a facade used to manipulate Sunny and everyone else. This version is also a sick and depraved pedophile who would regularly psychologically abuse and molest her own younger brother for her twisted sexual pleasure.
What makes her a Hate Sink?[]
- She is the exact opposite of her depiction in the canon. Rather than being a kind, caring person whose greatest flaw was an unhealthy sense of perfectionism, this one's love and kindness is purely a mask which hides a cruel, perverted personality.
- She would regularly sexually abuse her own younger brother, Sunny, severely traumatizing him and causing him to fear her and question if she truly loved him.
- Despite claiming she loves Sunny, it's clearly more out of perverted obsession, making it non-redemptive.
- The story makes it clear that her pedophilic desires extended to Basil, with her attempting to groom him via potentially explicit photos, and regularly stalking and ogling him. The only reason why she never got the chance to harm Basil in the same way she harmed Sunny is because of her surviving brother catching her advances and stopping her.
- It is implied that she would have abused Aubrey if she got the chance, with her wanting to spend a "girls' night" with her.
- She is also shown to be a massive coward in two different moments when she is almost discovered, she showed a high level of fear and that it is implied that she did not try anything against Hero because he was stronger than her.
- When Sunny finally found the courage to stand up to her, she doubled down on her actions, telling him that her actions were simply a way of venting, and even hitting Sunny before attempting to assault him. In the end, Sunny was forced to push his own sister down the stairs just to escape the torment and killing her, which only further fractured his already fragile mental state.
- Her influence still affected Sunny years later, with him regularly hallucinating her and her actions as a demon called "Something," while doing his best to separate her "nice" side from what he knew deep down she did.
