“ | Hear my words and heed my warning and laugh if you dare: witches live among us! | „ |
~ Mary Lou Barebone |
Mary Lou Barebone is a major antagonist in the 2016 fantasy film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. She was an American No-Maj in the 20th century who sought to eradicate all witches and wizards from the United States, and the adoptive mother of Chastity, Modesty and Credence Barebone.
She was portrayed by Samantha Morton.
What Makes Her a Hate Sink?[]
- She is extremely bigoted against the wizarding community and bent on driving them out of the United States. She also founded the New Salem Philanthropic Society to achieve her goal and spread anti-wizardkind propaganda to the public.
- She physically, verbally, and emotionally abused her adopted children and suppressed their magical abilities. She singled out Credence, abusing and beating him more severely than her other children. Her treatment towards him eventually caused him to develop a powerful, destructive Obscurus. She also snapped Modesty's toy wand in half.
- Her fate of being killed by Credence's Obscurus is considered karmic and played for satisfaction.
