Mayu's parents are a pair of minor antagonists in the anime Elfen Lied. They are Mayu's mother and stepfather, who abuse and neglect her until she runs away from home.
The Stepfather is voiced by Ty Mahany (English Dub) and Hideo Watanabe (Japanese version), while The mother is voiced by Christine Auten (English Dub) and an unknown voice actor/"seiyuu" was left uncredited (Japanese version).
What Makes them Hate Sinks?[]
- They're cruel and neglectful towards Mayu.
- Her stepfather routinely sexually molests her, while her mother is aware of this and does nothing to protect her. When Mayu tries to ask her mother for help, her mother slaps her and blames her for the abuse, claiming Mayu is the one who isn't wanted.
- Neither shows any concern for Mayu when she runs away, not contacting the police or filing a missing persons report. When Kouta offers to adopt Mayu, her mother readily agrees and never bothers to see her again. Even Kouta, who generally isn't the brightest bulb, comments that a loving mother would not do this.
- While they appear only briefly, it's clear that their abuse had a traumatic effect on Mayu, as shown by her recurrent fear of other men as they remind her of her stepfather's abuse. This is also the reason Mayu never judges Lucy for her actions, as she knows what abuse can do to a child.
Trivia[]
- It's unknown what happened to Mayu's biological father.
- The Japanese actress who voiced Mayu's mother asked to be uncredited for the role, apparently because of how abhorrent the character is.
- Them, aside from Unknown Man, Tomoo and his Partners, are the few Elfen Lied characters approved as Hate Sinks.
