Lapis Lazuli, also known as "Mean" Lapis in the credits, is a minor antagonist in the Steven Universe franchise, serving as the main antagonist of the Steven Universe Future episode "Why So Blue".
Alongside a navel-gem Lapis Lazuli, the two were still terraforming planets even after Steven's message of dismantling Homeworld's oppressive empire.
What Makes Her A Hate Sink?[]
- She's shown to be a massive jerk.
- Despite the widespread changes brought about by Era 3 and Steven’s efforts to promote peace and understanding, she actively ignores these developments and continues her destructive terraforming activities.
- Her stubborn refusal to adapt makes her appear willfully ignorant and unsympathetic.
- She was a very toxic friend to Nice Lapis, being extremely rude to her. Mean Lapis mocks Nice Lapis, but after their fight, she gains a level of respect for her.
- She shows that she is capable of complex emotions, yet her initial condescension and mockery make her an unlikable character.
- She dismisses Steven, thinking he is not worth full attention because he is half-Diamond. However, after receiving the brochure for Little Homeschool from Nice Lapis, she refuses to attend, showing her resistance to change and new ideas.
- Mean Lapis mocks Crystal Gem Lapis alongside Nice Lapis, showing her dismissive attitude towards those who are different from her. When Crystal Gem Lapis demonstrates creativity, she reacts with discomfort and embarrassment, highlighting her closed-mindedness.
- While she did show respect for Crystal Gem Lapis, she only respects her strength, and not her as a person.
- She pressures Nice Lapis and is condescending towards her, acting as a stereotypical ‘ean girl.’ This behavior makes her even more unlikable, as it shows her tendency to belittle and control those around her.
- She refused to attend Little Homeschool, unlike Nice Lapis, emphasizing her resistance to change and her preference for destructive behavior over constructive community involvement.
- Although she was willing to serve the Crystal Gems' Lapis as if she were her Diamond, she's nowhere to be seen in the end implying she rejected New Homeworld's peaceful ways much like Eyeball Ruby and Aquamarine.
- Like most Steven Universe Hate Sinks, but unlike most villains in Steven Universe, she never redeems herself.
- Although she might have had comedic moments, she subverts them.
- Overall, Mean Lapis embodies negative traits such as condescension, mockery, resistance to change, and a dismissive attitude towards others. Her relationships with Nice Lapis, Steven Universe, and Crystal Gem Lapis Lazuli highlight these qualities, making her a frustrating and unlikable character. She is often regarded as one of the most detestable characters in the series, alongside Eyeball Ruby and Zircon (Prosecuting).
