Melvin "Cheese" Wagstaff is a secondary antagonist in the HBO series The Wire, serving as a supporting antagonist in seasons two, three and four, and a major antagonist in season five. He is a drug dealer and enforcer for his uncle, East Baltimore drug kingpin Proposition Joe. Cheese later betrays his uncle and begins enforcing for Marlo Stanfield's West Side drug cartel.

He is portrayed by the rapper Method Man.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • He is grossly overconfident, as he believes he's a master criminal when in reality he's terrible at being a gangster and the only reason he gets as far as he does is because of his uncle.
  • He participates in dogfighting. When his beloved dog dies, he accepts no responsibility and takes out his anger on his opponent, completely oblivious to the fact that he's just as responsible for his dog's death since he's the one who chose to enter it in the fight.
  • He betrays Proposition Joe, a far more likable gangster, to Marlo, even though Joe has saved Cheese's life before.
  • His social darwinist philosophy is a transparent excuse for his greed and treachery, and he is humiliatingly killed by Slim Charles when trying to explain that he serves the strongest side.
  • The only member of the Co-Op to complain when Slim Charles shoots Cheese is Shorty, and Shorty only complains because Slim cost them money, not because he liked Cheese.
