Montgomery "Monty" de la Cruz is the major antagonist of the original script for the Netflix 13 Reasons Why series. He is a student at Liberty High School and one of Bryce Walker's friends.

He is portrayed by Timothy Granaderos.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?

• He is a bully to everybody around him, which includes Tony Padilla, who he frequently mocks for being gay, and especially Tyler Down, who he constantly beats for no reason.
• Unlike Bryce, who is at least somewhat affable, he is an outright dimwitted and violent sociopath who cannot control his temper, having no charisma or smarts.
• He pervertedly dances with Courtney Crimson at the school dance, subtly forcing her to reveal who she is kissing in a photo.
• He nearly runs over Alex and several other students and feels no remorse for it.
• He beats Alex to near unconscious after the latter encouraged him to a fight.
• He commits several horrible crimes to silence anyone from testifying against Bryce Walker. This includes trying to run over Clay with a car, trying to force Alex (a recent suicide survivor) to commit suicide with a gun, taunting the Baker family about their dead daughter and other horrible things.
• He gruesomely beats and rapes Tyler with a broom for getting Baseball season cancelled.
• While he mentions his father beating him with a hammer and abusing him, it is never played with any sympathy and is completely unrelated to his actions.

Trivia

• While Monty was intended to be a Hate Sink by the original director (who even outright stated he is meant to worse than Bryce in many ways and the least sympathetic villain in his show), due to poor writing from the new writers after his sudden death, the new writers decided to change the script and he ended up getting a sympathetic portrayal (despite not being the original director's intentions), which the new writers thought would stop causing fans to attack Monty's actor and needed a plot to continue renewing the seasons. This has caused many fans to feel that his sympathy is poorly written and comes out of nowhere.
