~ Mort's famous quote |
Mort is a minor antagonist in the film "Blood and Concrete: A Love Story", which is a parody of romance films. He was once a infamously foul-mouthed drug dealer who owed Joey Turks, the film's protagonist, money.
He was played and voiced by the late William Bastiani, who is also known for his role as Omag from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Even before the events of the film, he was a infamously drug dealer, selling drugs illegally to make money. Moreover, judging by his house, he makes a lot of money from this illegal business.
- He is an angry jerk who can get angry over the smallest things and who treats people in a seemingly rude and vulgar manner.
- While he has not been shown to insult anyone other than Joey, suggesting that he is calm outside of his anger, this is not too significant considering his stereotypical redneck image in the film, which is shown throughout his screen time.
- Furthermore, when Spuntz and Daniels entered his house, he did not even think that it could be another person and began to insult them, thinking that it was Joey, so it cannot be said that Mort does not treat others the same way.
- While it could be argued that when Joey tried to steal Mort's TV and then broke it, it was a somewhat justified act of his anger, but in reality it is not so, because in the movie it is said that Mort owed Joey money, which he never gave him, and considering that Mort clearly lives well, then Joey did nothing wrong in the end, because he simply wanted to get what Mort did not want to give him.
- Due to the broken television, Mort began threatening and attempting to kill Joey by slashing his shoulder and then insulting him with extremely rude words.
- It can also be argued that Mort actually planned to kill Joey if he ever decided to make his presence known again, as demonstrated in the scene where he insulted the hiding Spuntz and Daniels before they killed him.
- He is indirectly responsible for Joey potentially going to prison for an alleged murder, all because of the aforementioned TV incident where Joey left fingerprints on Mort's clothes, which was pure accident.
- Although his death is played slightly for sympathy by Detective Hank Dick, it does not make him a scapegoat or sympathetic in any way, as Detective Hank Dick was unaware of who Mort was, thinking that he was a common citizen.
- Even if we put that aside, his death still plays more for karma than sympathy, considering he wanted to kill Joey for basically nothing.
- Moreover, this sympathy is played extremely shallowly.
