The Mouth of Sauron is a supporting antagonist in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel, The Lord of the Rings and Sir Peter Jackson's film trilogy adaptation. He is a supporting antagonist in the extended edition of the film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

He is a Black Númenórean and a high-ranking servant of Sauron who carries out his master's messages.

He was played by Bruce Spence in the Peter Jackson trilogy and in Rankin/Bass' Return of the King, he was voiced by the late Don Messick.

What Makes Him A Hate Sink?[]

In General[]

He serves Sauron and aids him in his goal to conquer and enslave Middle-earth.
He tries to break the spirits of the Men of the West so that Sauron would triumph over them.
He taunts and belittles Gandalf and his companions during the negotiations.
While he does, as his name implies, partly speak on Sauron's behalf, it is very clear that he takes sadistic glee in verbally attacking those he comes across and is merely using his status as a messenger/spokesperson as a means to mock others with impunity.

He has tortured and mutilated many prisoners in the past.
He lied to the Fellowship that Frodo had been captured and would be tortured for many years unless the Men of the West agreed to his terms.
He tried to enforce Sauron's terms onto the Men of the West, where all lands are under Sauron's rule and the people of Middle-earth submit to his rule and pay tribute to him.
He is a coward who turned and ran the second he was threatened by Aragorn and others.
He desired to be appointed as ruler of the West by Sauron.

He sadistically lied to Gandalf, Merry, Pippin, Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas that Frodo had been tortured to death by Sauron, knowing full well they cared deeply about him, to break their spirits.
