~ Mr. Grasping |
Mr. Grasping is the main antagonist of An American Tail: The Treasure of Manhattan Island, the second sequel to An American Tail. He is the loathsome leader of the factory owners.
He was voiced by Ron Perlman, who also voiced Sozin in Avatar: The Last Airbender and Podestà in Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Took advantage of the factory workers by convincing them that the Indian mice are enemies.
- Abused his factory workers.
- Ordered Chief McBrusque (another purely evil An American Tail villain and hate sink) and the factory officers to keep the factory workers in line in a brutal way when they started to strike.
- Told the workers not to listen to Papa Mousekewitz who reminded them why they came to America and tells them that the real enemy was the factory owners, foolishly saying "He's not one of us, he's a foreigner." This poor choice of words comes back to bite him in the rear end when Papa mentions that they are all foreigners, and that the only real American mice are the Indians. After this rousing speech, the workers come to their senses and turn on their bosses. Toplofty even calls him out for turning every mouse in Manhattan against them.
- Committed an attempted genocide when he ordered McBrusque, Scuttlebutt (though he was more comedic and may not have wanted to actually do it, as he is not pure evil) and the factory police rats to turn the Indian mice's home into a burial ground.
- The crimes he commits are much worse than anything Toplofty and O'Bloat ever did. In fact, Grasping was the one who did all the lying about the Indians while the other two factory owners just stood back and watched with glee.
- He lacks the entertaining qualities of his two colleagues, including O'Bloat's goofiness and Toplofty's suave charisma, not to mention the honor of being voiced by the late Tony Jay.
Trivia[]
- Mr. Grasping is one of the evilest characters in the American Tail film series (alongside his colleagues, Chief McBrusque and Warren T. Rat). This is due to the fact that he is viewed as a racist character with no redeemable qualities. His attempted genocide is also the most heinous act ever committed by a villain in the series.
