NOTE: This article only contains information from the film version of Mr. Jones as his book counterpart is not a Hate Sink. Thus, only information from the film should be included here. |
Mr. Jones is the overarching antagonist of the 1954 animated film Animal Farm. He is a sadistic and cruel farmer who abuses his animals, causing them to rebel against him and drive him out.
He was voiced by the late Maurice Denham.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He’s an abusive drunk who enjoys tormenting his animals out of sadism.
- In contrast to his book counterpart who was once a good farmer, this version is even more sadistic and shows no redeeming traits, and it’s said his problems are of his own making so he lacks an excuse for his actions.
- He fires his shotgun to scare the animals when they’re mourning Old Major’s death.
- He neglects to feed the animals and tries to whip them when they rise up against him.
- He leads an armed attack on the farm, trying to shoot many of them, killing a dog and wounding Snowball. It’s also likely he would have finished Snowball off if Boxer hadn’t intervened.
- Even after his expulsion the animals are so terrified of his abuse that they put up with Napoleon’s takeover due to him falsely claiming Snowball was in league with Jones.
- It’s shown that even his fellow farmers hold him in contempt for his alcoholism and don’t invite him to join their second attack on the farm, telling him that his time is over.
- He uses dynamite to destroy the animals’ windmill as an act of spite, which causes his own death as he remains in the windmill due to his drunkenness rather than escape.
Trivia[]
- His 1999 version doesn’t count due to being more sympathetic.
- His more negative portrayal in the film was reportedly requested by the CIA (which was secretly funding it) who wanted it made clear that he was worse than the average farmer to make it more understandable why his animals revolted.
- The film’s trailer solidifies his status as a Hate Sink, as it assures the viewer that he gets his just desserts.
