Mr. Shu is a minor character in Dragon Ball Z, acting as the main antagonist of the filler episode, Frieza's Counterattack. He is a tutor hired to teach Gohan.

What makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • He gives Gohan, who is only seven years old, first year high school problems (as stated in the Japanese original version), and criticizes him when he makes any mistakes, despite the fact that Gohan is much too young to be given those kinds of teaching lessons. When Gohan calls him out on this (either saying he hasn't learned them yet in the original or that mistakes are to be learned from in the English dub), Shu responds by whipping Gohan across the back with a whip 18 times for talking back to him.
  • He insults Goku, telling Gohan that his father was worthless for abandoning him. When Gohan gets mad at this, Shu tries to whip him again.
  • He calls Chi-Chi in and spins the story to make it seem like Gohan was about to attack him for no good reason.
  • When he continues to insult Goku and Gohan calls him out on it, Shu whips Gohan across the face hard enough to draw blood.
  • He continues to insult Goku and, in the original Japanese version, insult Gohan's intelligence, saying that he has no academic future and a pig or a monkey would be easier to teach. He proceeds to laugh at his own jokes until Chi-Chi has enough and literally throws him out the window.
  • He yells at Chi-Chi (in the Japanese version, he says that she's also to blame for Gohan turning out the way he did, whereas in the English dub, he threatens her), after which she rightfully chases him off their property.
  • He is very stupid, insulting Chi-Chi's own husband and son and whipping the latter hard enough to make him bleed right in front of her while expecting her to be okay with it. In real life, this would have gotten a tutor arrested, be it in Japan or America, as such behavior would be considered child abuse regardless.
  • He is very arrogant. The Japanese version has him boast that he is the best tutor in the world, which is immediately proven wrong when he gives a seven-year-old boy first year high school problems. So, on top of being a terrible person, he's also simply not a good teacher.
  • Considering the fact that he is evil, it's implied he wasn't even revived after Majin Buu's rampage on Earth, because the protagonists only revived good people. If this is the case, this wouldn't make him a scapegoat at all, and if anything, he most likely got what he deserved.
  • Apart from most villains in the series, with the exception of Goku Black, Mr. Shu wasn't born or raised into evil, is a completely normal human with very low resources and chooses to be a bad person all by himself.

Trivia[]

  • His Japanese name translates to "The worst teacher", further vindicating how he was meant to be hated. Strangely, Chi-Chi found nothing off about this and hired him regardless.
  • Mr. Shu's treatment of Gohan was so awful that for many people, Chi-Chi's act of literally throwing him out of the house and chasing him away was enough to redeem her for all of her previous behavior over the course of the series.
