Prester Virgil, known more commonly as Mr. Virgil and by his company position Witch Hunter, is the villainous main protagonist of the Toontown: Corporate Clash fanfiction The Witch Hunter.
He is a Manager working for C.O.G.S., Inc., though his plans change upon meeting opposition in the form of Drake the Dragon Toon.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Throughout the fanfiction, he is not likeable despite being the protagonist. Before the events of the fanfiction, anyone who has fought the Witch Hunter in-game will know that he was never viewed positively, as when he is defeated, Lawbots will signify that he harasses fellow employees and is brought to his superior after each defeat.
- Upon seeing Drake the Dragon Toon, he was interested in him because he saw him as an individual he could exploit for his own gain, which failed as Drake saw through this, even mentioning his attempts of teaming up were pragmatic.
- When he failed to convince Drake to join him, he resolved to turn his kind against him even though he practically did nothing wrong.
- Granted, while Word of God states that Drake has hurt Cogs like Mr. Virgil, the Cog is not motivated by this, and Toons by nature are inclined to destroy Cogs for reasons that digress too much from this point. Nevertheless, damage dealt is never permanent (besides in one case that may be retconned from Toontown: Corporate Clash lore).
- While attempting to convince some Toons in the Elder Head Quarters to join his cause, he continued to berate Drake. Even then, no one inside buys into his story, as even Al Kemical (formerly Al Bumbledorf) states that the "monster" is a gentle giant incapable of causing harm to his kind's infrastructure. He then got into a squabble with them, and after he defeated them temporarily, he had all Toons of Ye Olde Toontowne (the Stone & Iron District to Mr. Virgil as said in the fanfiction) gather together to defeat the giant.
- Even though he managed to get an entire district of Toons to side with him despite being their enemy, he:
- only did this for pragmatic reasons despite speaking potential dangers the titan could pose.
- was only able to manage this through sheer incompetence of the Toons, as the note at the top signifies. This goes without saying how he failed to win over Drake and four others. The fact his method of manipulations for all were pretty much the same for everyone means he has no charisma.
- Even though he managed to get an entire district of Toons to side with him despite being their enemy, he:
- After he won over the Toons, he wanted them to attack Drake in a painful manner. He armed his mob with maces, pitchforks, and torches to name a few so that they would not use their Gags, which would have done nothing against the "beast."
- While Drake was crying from the pain, Mr. Virgil mocked him, callously deeming it "applesauce that none of us will be susceptible to buying," before blasting fire his face.
- After Al Kemical comes to the colossus's defense, Mr. Virgil no longer has control over the mob. His pleas for freedom fall on deaf ears as the deer helps the other Toons to understand the harmlessness of Drake. Once the dragon proves his harmlessness by flattening Al, to which the latter is unhurt, Mr. Virgil fails to turn the tables back in his favor.
- He gets brutally defeated a first time by being crushed by Drake, but this is, as well as his month-long stay in a hospital, is deserved for what he did.
- He is shown to be an impolite host, as he considers sending away the polite Mrs. Dama despite knowing she has baked cookies. He would have gone through with it if not for the quality of his hospital food.
- He attempted to use Mrs. Dama to further his attempt at killing Drake, actively brushing off her concerns.
- While it is seemingly slightly more justified since Drake attacked and hospitalized him, it is still something Mr. Virgil brought upon himself, eliminating this as a valid Freudian Excuse.
- He crudely interrupted Mrs. Dama repeatedly, talking over her about his plot, showing no respect for her.
- Mr. Virgil ultimately wanted to use Mrs. Dama to contact others to contribute to an attack against the giant, displaying no visible care for those that could be potentially harmed. The elder was disgusted by his idea and actively refused to assist.
- Upon her refusal, Mr. Virgil gripped her by the tie and attempted to intimidate her into submission, but that failed due to Mrs. Dama's surprising strength that not even his cauldron mask was enough to protect from.
- After being knocked over, Mrs. Dama was shown to be concerned for what she did to Mr. Virgil. Despite this, he pulled a sneak attack with a pitchfork and used it to painfully pin her to a wall before shoving a cookie into her mouth and making a call.
- Mrs. Dama states that if she is left to die, then Mr. Virgil will be landed in plenty of trouble, so his act of taking her to the factory to be repaired is just so he would not face any consequence or raise suspicion rather than genuine remorse. He even lied when he got to his post, blaming Drake for damaging her.
- When Mr. Virgil said that Ms. Monsoon would be the one to defeat Drake, she was unsure as to how she would, to which two of the Witch Hunter's mob members, Mr. Pane and Mr. Ygma, intimidated her to work with their boss, and Mr. Virgil agreed in a similarly threatening manner.
- He gives no plan as to how Ms. Monsoon will take on Drake, only being concerned about stopping the colossus from interfering with his activities, which to this point the giant has not done unprovoked.
- After Ms. Monsoon finally agreed hesitantly, Mr. Virgil threatened to fire her if she fails. When she is gone, two of his minions ask if he genuinely has faith in her, to which he replies that he sees her as nothing more than cannon fodder, saying out loud that she would end up like the Mouthpiece, Mrs. Dama.
- When Mr. Pane and Mr. Ygma shared that Ms. Monsoon never acted like a true Cog, Mr. Virgil became angry with her, outright saying that he would have murdered her if he knew this earlier, and when he recalls the incident one month ago, he angrily states that he could have destroyed her with the mob of Toons. However, he calms himself on the thought that he thinks Drake will kill her himself.
- Keep in mind that Misty Monsoon, the Rainmaker, is one of the most cherished Cogs in Toontown: Corporate Clash due to her supposed desire to be friends with Toons. The fact that Mr. Virgil is callous towards the condition she could end up in adds a lot to his deplorability.
- Despite what happened earlier, he still wanted to use the dragon Toon to eliminate his opposition, which he includes those being a higher rank than him, including, but not limited to, Miss Morsecode, the Litigation Team, and the Chairman of the company he works for.
- He murdered a Cog that was with the present mob because he spoke too much in front of the newcomer and had his two other henchmen dispose of it in Barnacle Boatyard (the Offshore & Drilling District to Mr. Virgil as said in the fanfiction) and pass it off as pollution to harm the environment. He also wanted to know of Ms. Monsoon's fate when both of them returned from the deed.
- When there is suspicion of him being responsible for Mrs. Dama's injuries, he is about to say that he can form mobs to kill anyone before Mr. Ygma interrupts him to finish his thought, stating both him and Mr. Pane have heard this from him for the umpteenth time, emphasizing how hostile Mr. Virgil can get. He also implies that because of this, it is the reason why his henchmen never betray him, meaning they serve him out of fear of what their boss can do rather than out of genuine loyalty.
- Mr. Virgil was enraged to hear that Ms. Monsoon and Drake the Dragon Toon have started becoming friends, only recollecting himself after hearing that his minions spread this all over the Internet to tarnish her career. While he is happy with the work of his minions, this is still pragmatic rather than genuine as it benefits him, and even with the possibility of her being offboarded from C.O.G.S., Inc., he still wants to murder her despite her never wrong him him in any way until now.
- When he searches for Ms. Monsoon on Lighthouse Lane, who is crying over the prospect of being sacked, her friend Mary Anna comforts her the best she can by saying that she will always be around if she needs a dive buddy, to which Mr. Virgil apathetically interrupts, calling it a "daring declaration."
- When Ms. Anna is standing up for Ms. Monsoon, Mr. Virgil, Mr. Pane, and Mr. Ygma said what they found about about the Rainmaker and Drake's friendship, which Ms. Anna points out was the catalyst for the workforce outright bullying her on all her social media accounts to the point of deleting them all. While Mr. Virgil technically had nothing to do with this, he still praised his henchmen earlier and continued to remain remorseless. This is a huge kick-the-dog moment for the protagonists.
- He offered alternatives for Ms. Monsoon instead of being sacked, which Ms. Anna already believes is not good in the slightest. Just so she cannot interfere, he pins her to the floor with a pitchfork before focusing his attention back to Ms. Monsoon.
- Though after this she does call her a "valuable asset," this only highlights how he sees other useful Cogs as tools which he has no problem hurting if they inconvenience him.
- Mr. Virgil's only choices for Ms. Monsoon to avoid being fired were to either buckle down and do her job as a Cog and hurt Toons with dedication, which means she has to betray her friendlier personality, or be killed. Misty begging not to die after refusing the first choice while the Witch Hunter taunts her predicament is supposed to be seen as yet another kick-the-dog moment for him, after which he shoves a pitchfork into her chest.
- Before his second defeat, Mr. Virgil attempted to get Drake to kill Ms. Monsoon instead of him.
- After he is defeated a second time, he is jailed by authorities for a number of undisclosed reasons and attempting to kill Misty, with a bonus of being fired himself.
- Although Misty is not well-liked by Cogs in-universe, even more so thanks in small part to Mr. Virgil and she was also fired, even the guards agree that he did not go about it the correct way.
- While it is not exactly untrue that Mr. Virgil is important for C.O.G.S., Inc., it only shows a bit of his egotism, which would get worse as the fanfiction progresses.
- While he is crafty for using a pink slip to slip up a guard and free himself, it does not detract from how hated he should be.
- After seven minutes of staying at home after walking from prison to his abode, he plotted vengeance against the company he previously worked at by attempting to defame them by finding out secrets and spreading them throughout. This is far from reasonable, as he has only been bringing misfortune upon himself due to his actions, especially since much of the company was uninvolved in what happened to him.
- With the exception of Mr. Pane and Mr. Ygma, his entire mob disbanded after he was axed from the company, giving the implications that he was not a good boss to them.
- Mr. Ygma reiterates that he and Mr. Pane understand the consequences of betraying him, furthering the fact that their loyalty is merely out of fear of Mr. Virgil's wrath.
- After getting knocked silly by Satellite Investor Nix and learning from Mr. Kuiper that Mr. Pane and Mr. Ygma informed them that Mr. Virgil plotted to defame them, he insulted them and said that he did not care what the Cashbots did to them, about to leave before he was attacked, preventing him from leaving. This shows he has no care for even his closest and "most loyal" minions.
- Even though Mr. Kuiper speaks fondly of Mr. Virgil, noting that the Witch Hunter for trying to take on Drake for one example, the respect is thrown out the window after the gang's plan is discovered and the Satellite Investors are attacked.
- Even if Mr. Virgil never did this, he is still too hateable for the respect to amount to anything.
- Even though he offers to team up with Mr. Kuiper and the Satellite Investors after hearing Misty and Drake were teaming up to end the feud between Toons and Cogs, this is largely pragmatic and to save his own skin as he detests the idea of the two races joining together.
- When alone with his subordinates, he berates them for their betrayal, saying that they "have no concept of sacrificing for the greater good," making himself more important than his henchmen.
- While he arguably is "more important" due to being of a higher rank and his minions being seen as "disposable," this only furthers his lack of care for them.
- When Mr. Pane and Mr. Ygma showed concern for their boss, the former even wondering what would happen if anyone set foot on the Witch Hunter's property, Mr. Virgil stated that he would murder them, which is supposed to be seen as too excessive. He even brags about nearly killing Misty.
- During the interview to find the newest replacement for Misty, he:
- was cruel in pointing out Troy Maya Best's faults and dismissed her upon her response about how she did not like others being mistreated.
- was similarly cruel to Trent Dithers. While Trent is annoying and cheesy in his own right, it does not justify Mr. Virgil's reaction.
- did not give Mr. Pane a chance to be interviewed for the position as the new Rainmaker. While it is slightly comical, this is more on the henchman's side, and it is way too insignificant to make either of them more likeable.
- got annoyed over El Lament briefly speaking Spanish.
- Even though he compliments El Lament for being ideal for the role as the Rainmaker, it is still only because he sees him as useful rather than anything genuine.
- Though he praises El Lament for his work in getting him pardoned, it is because it is beneficial to him as no one can go after him for being a criminal. Even then, he is quick to get angry at his new coworker for continuously using Spanish, forcing him to use not a syllable of the language.
- He crudely interrupted El Lament when he was about to talk to speak about the Firestarter, although he was perceived as obnoxious by at least one other in the room. After that, he bad-mouthed Mr. Bonpyre's "pushover temperament," ignoring the fact that he did not know about the pardon and that he was not arguing about why Mr. Virgil should still be imprisoned.
- If Mr. Bonpyre remained adamant as to Mr. Virgil being wanted, the latter would have only argued back.
- Even though he was a great deal of help to him, Mr. Virgil threatened to kill El Lament for making a comment.
- He outright says that his mob is permanently indentured to his demands and threatened to kill anyone that opposes.
- Despite him being one of his greatest enemies, he practically forgot about the existence of Drake. He still declares that the dragon will be finished when Operation: Reformation concludes even though he has not been bothered by the giant for two chapters.
- He was disgusted upon learning that Mr. Revvington was unable to hurt Toons. During his conversation with Mr. Ygma, he even states that the override should have been fully installed onto his being so that his old self is deleted and replaced by a more "capable" version of himself.
- Arguably more so than Ms. Monsoon, Mr. Revvington, the Chainsaw Consultant, is a cherished Cog for being very tragic due to the override taking over his body many times while he barely has any control. Even in his fight, he attempts to resist the override in phase two of his battle and try to help Toons, fearing the worst for them. This is a huge kick-the-dog moment for Mr. Virgil.
- After pondering the override, his next immediate thought was using the override for other Cogs. He threw a rocking chair into a fireplace, which is meant to be symbolic of how off-his-rocker he has become. He wanted to use the override on others to be exalted like a deity, giving him a huge ego. Even Mr. Ygma is starting to become scared by this point.
- He was mean to his introduction with Dr. O'Veer-Ride. When first introduced, he refused a handshake, not even exchanging a "hello."
- Mr. Ygma calls Mr. Virgil "aloof" even to his closest friends and advises to the doctor that no one should get on his bad side, indicating this bad show of manners is natural.
- After encountering Mr. Revvington, he was immediately insensitive to his condition, as he tried to suggest that the override was benefitting him while getting angry he tried to stop it. He then cursed him for his personality, seemingly similar to that of Misty.
- When Mr. Revvington began to suffer from the override taking hold and vent his frustrations, Mr. Virgil only said that he deserved the pain that he was getting, commenting how the override would be better for him despite all the pain it has caused him.
- His insensitivity makes this one of his biggest kick-the-dog moments in the fanfiction.
- Having enough of him, he excessively violently smashed Mr. Revvington's head against the tabletop, with the latter screaming from pain. After that, he said that Mr. Revvington was better off dead when Dr. O'Veer-Ride entered.
- When Dr. O'Veer-Ride was prepared to work on the Chainsaw Consultant to get the override fixed, Mr. Virgil made a special request: he wanted Mr. Revvington conscious while he had no control over his body. When the doctor was worried it was too cruel, Mr. Virgil threatened him with a pitchfork. Considering how the override affects Mr. Revvington in Toontown: Corporate Clash, this is essentially a few notches worse than before, giving him his biggest kick-the-dog moment yet.
- After the override was installed, he tested the new Chainsaw Consultant's mindset by questioning what it would do in the face of a Toon. Mr. Virgil was joyed when the Cog implied the Toon would die.
- Even when being proud of what has become of the Chainsaw Consultant, he egotistically claimed no one surpasses the Witch Hunter.
- After what transpired earlier, Mr. Virgil requests Dr. O'Veer-Ride to install the override on all Cogs. When the doctor grew concerned, the bigger Cog intimidated him with a gaze, to which Mr. Ygma has to tell O'Veer-Ride that the doctor's talents should not be lost over a disagreement.
- He showed no concern for when Dr. O'Veer-Ride also mentioned it might take a lot of time, implying that he might have sleepless nights, which Mr. Virgil did not even think about, showing how he cares for his own ambitions.
- While hearing El Lament talk about his concerns regarding a maniac overtaking the mindsets of the employees, Mr. Virgil states that he actually likes the override placed on them, especially with the possibility they would be praising him.
- This shows that, despite wanting to "improve" the company he worked for, he was egotistically more interested in the fact they would be subservient to him, being unconcerned of the agonizing state he knows they would be left in while the override takes their bodies over, thus making the entirety of his participation in Operation: Reformation for pragmatic reasons, even stating the doctor gives the Witch Hunter an edge when El Lament, one of his biggest fans, began to worry.
- He got angry when it was revealed that El Lament and other Lawbots arrested Dr. O'Veer-Ride for the action and grabbed the subordinate by the eye, insulted him, and outright stated that he did not care about how much harm he was inflicting on the employees as long as he gets what he wants, easily making Mr. Virgil the easiest character to despise. He even tore an eye right off of the elemental when he refused.
- When Mr. Virgil wakes up in his Chairman's office after being struck silly by El Lament, Mr. Cyger congratulates him on what he did. While Mr. Cyger does openly praise him for all of Mr. Virgil's seemingly deplorable actions, this is not intended to make the Witch Hunter any less dislikeable as the Chairman himself is not too likeable himself, reflecting his personality from Toontown: Corporate Clash as a greedy and careless businessman.
- While Mr. Cyger continued to talk positively about Mr. Virgil's deeds for the company, the latter's response was only to be happy that he was getting any praise at all rather than saying thanks, showing his selfishness.
- Mr. Cyger states how the override has caused many unaffected Suits to withdraw from the company, which includes Mr. Campbell, who had a brotherly relationship with Mr. Revvington in-game, and Mr. Kuiper, due to the Satellite Investors getting overridden, too, showing just how negatively the override had impacted their relationships. Mr. Virgil was not even upset about the Satellite Investors getting overridden even though he worked with them and their boss previously.
- After promoting him to a level 96, the Chairman concluded the meeting by ordering Mr. Virgil to scout out the traitorous Cogs, to which Mr. Virgil promised a painful retribution for them all.
- He summons the overridden Cogs to make them swear loyalty to him.
- Mr. Pane and Mr. Ygma also came, which Mr. Virgil commented that he is confused as to why they do not have the override installed. This is despite the fact they are his closest followers, making his desire for the override on them cruelly unnecessary.
- After sending his henchmen off of the tower to find the gathering of Toons and Cogs, Mr. Virgil remained to make the mob affirm their loyalty.
- When Mr. Ygma located the gathering, Mr. Virgil and his mob began their march to Toontown Central (the Central Oil District) to capture them all. After everyone left the tower, he unleashed a mighty flame and let it spread across the Stone & Iron District, with screams to cement that the destruction he caused was terroristic. While Toons are able to use portable holes to escape from the danger and there would be no on-page evidence of death seen, he still caused a lot of destruction as later it would be shown Toons' shops be reduced to ash.
- During their march, he also took sadism in hearing the Toons being upset, with the narrative even considering it "a euphony that he could put on a vinyl disc and replay whenever he pleased."
- When the mob arrived, Mr. Virgil loathed the sight of the Toons and Suits getting together, and in the middle of a speech by both Drake and Misty, he revealed himself and scorned the idea of uniting with Toons. He then attacked Drake with a fireball to his face before he armed his mob with weapons and ordered the capture of everyone present.
- He attempted to attack Drake personally before Misty intervened. Mr. Virgil struck back with a pitchfork to her chest before blasting Drake with daggers and fire. When the dragon was knocked down, he very unnecessarily cruelly pierced his hands and feet down with stakes and did not say anything until Drake stopped crying, something Mr. Virgil enjoyed hearing. When it stopped, he told his enemy that he is as pathetic as his friend.
- Mr. Virgil is not just kicking the dog in this moment, he is using a spade to smash the skull of it and enjoy its whining while still smashing it with the shovel.
- Even though he suggests he is more reasonable than the others, this is actually a huge, egotistical delusion as he goes to extreme lengths to benefit himself rather than others, and even then, he has gone way too far with his actions at this point for him to be seen as reasonable.
- When Mr. Pane and Mr. Ygma stated out loud that Mr. Virgil was becoming as strong as a god and that they would worship him without hesitation in spite of his questionable actions, Mr. Virgil says the same will happen with every Cog since they are bound to him and not Mr. Cyger, saying that he would turn C.O.G.S., Inc. into Virgil Unlimited. With a name like that, it is a huge display of egotism.
- Hypocritically, he earlier berated the Suits for betraying C.O.G.S., Inc. when Mr. Virgil is doing it on a worse scale.
- Even though Mr. Virgil offered to let Cogs become a part of his company, he also wanted to rob them of being themselves as he wanted to put the override on them. He also said that anyone who refused would die.
- During him and his mob's travel to the Stone & Iron District, he began rebuilding Toontown into Virgil Unlimited-style infrastructure from the ashes which were left behind by the fire and declared that Toontown would become Virgilville. The mob only spoke positively due to being forced to, as it is otherwise bleak and un-Toony.
- When Mr. Ygma and Mr. Pane tried to offer their input, he threatened them with a pitchfork and a torch respectively, showing he not only cannot take criticism, but he still does not care for his subordinates.
- He rapidly transformed Toontown into a Virgilville-esque atmosphere, using a red flame that would convert it all to his liking. While it is dubious how many casualties there were as a result, surviving Toons would nevertheless be unable to prosper in these conditions.
- The new name he gave to Cogs/Suits were Virgilvillians, displaying his huge megalomania. The only things he tasked them with were eliminating all Toons and praising him endlessly.
- When Mr. Pane brought up the possibility of rebels, Mr. Virgil had no problem stating that anyone against him would be thwarted, even those not captured or affected by the override.
- Mr. Virgil even states that he prefers having the override on his workers despite everything they have done for him, giving him no honor and, once again, displaying no care for his subordinates.
- A minor moment, but the top of Mr. Virgil's new tower has a balcony, which he and Mr. Pane had nearly reached to top of. Mr. Virgil ordered Mr. Pane to leave without telling him that leaving from the balcony is more convenient, forcing him to go back down the stairs for no reason.
- He was filled with pride on seeing the Virgilvillians worshipping him, still showing of how much of a megalomaniac he is.
- During Virgilville's time, he replaced the Cogs' businesslike arsenal with genuinely hurtful weapons, which is downright unnecessarily cruel. He also had the Cogs burn any captured Toons to death as offerings.
- Before the executions, he sadistically thought about Misty crying over Drake's slow and painful death.
- He seared off a piece of Drake off and, with unneeded cruelty, asked if Misty wanted to try as a "last supper," and he gave it to Mr. Pane and Mr. Ygma when she refused.
- He also suggested that he would cook Drake alive and give him to the Virgilvillians as a big feast.
- The excessive harm against Drake is supposed to be yet another big kick-the-dog moment for Mr. Virgil.
- Even though he says they are "more worthy" of it, this is only him comparing them to Misty and, like every other moment, he does not genuinely care for them.
- His immediate reaction to his fiery attempt at killing Drake being thwarted was to take it out on Misty, which the narrative makes clear that it was not her (Misty's hair changes either due to her emotion or because she altered the weather, which she did not do due to her hair being normal), and then order for her to be killed.
- Showing he really did not care for his closest subordinates, he does not react to them being suddenly fired from cannons and is more concerned with seeing that some Cogs have come to oppose him.
- While El Lament was expressing disgust at Mr. Virgil's actions, the latter tried appealing to the former because he idolized him. El Lament would make it clear that he only looked up to him because of his supposed competency over others while being smart and refined, and he even says that while he hates Misty, he calls Mr. Virgil much, much worse than her.
- After being struck by lightning and barely being dented, he arrogantly claims to be as strong as a god before striking back with a stronger bolt, which grievously hurt El Lament. He then attempted to kill Mr. Kuiper.
- When he heard Drake encourage all Cogs to leave, in a fury, he trapped everyone in a ring of fire. Then he flew over to the crowd and professed his ultimate hate toward the dragon and his Cog friend before attempting to strike him, only to get struck to the floor by Misty's lightning.
- In response to:
- Misty angrily calling him out for his terror, he pridefully stated that he managed to kill off Toons for good while running a productive company and being lauded.
- Mr. Revvington saying the overridden Cogs were put in tortuous states, he brushed it off as a blessing for all.
- Mr. Campbell saying he did more harm than deforestation, he said that the Treekiller cared too much.
- Upon being told by Ms. Grayelle to leave, he agreed while taunting that Toontown was still converted to Virgilville, and in a huge kick-the-dog moment he revealed that technically everyone was still enslaved to him because they, while overridden, agreed to it. This made Mr. Revvington uncomfortable, but Mr. Virgil taunted him over this matter. He then said that when he returns with greater power given by Mr. Cyger, he would make it so they would not resist him at all.
- Given Mr. Cyger's personality in Toontown: Corporate Clash, as well as how Mr. Virgil stole all of his employees, it is highly infeasible that the former would have granted a promotion.
- After Mr. Virgil was killed by Drake, that moment was celebrated as a holiday, cementing how despised he was.
Trivia[]
- He is the only Toontown fanon character to be a Hate Sink.
- Ironically, the Witch Hunter is one of the author's favorite Cogs.
