Nessus is a minor antagonist in Disney's Hercules franchise, serving as a minor antagonist in the 1997 film, Hercules. He is an extremely aggressive and perverted, yet dimwitted centaur, who is known as the River Guardian. He is based on the Greek mythical being of the same name.
He was voiced by Jim Cummings, who has also voiced Hadrian in Minecraft: Story Mode, Steele in Balto, and Budzo in Zambezia.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
In General[]
- Although he's not as evil as Hades, he completely lacks Hades' comedic presence, charm, likability and cool moments. Nessus lacks any of those moments, and is instead portrayed as a completely detestable pervert with almost nothing remotely enjoyable about him.
- Despite the small amount of his screen time in the film, it does not affect how utterly despicable and loathsome he is in the slightest, as has enough characteristics to show us what he's all about.
- Although it's an extremely brief scene, it's somewhat implied that he is xenophobic towards humans or at least believes himself to be superior to them, due to the fact that when Hercules confronts him, he called him "Two Legs" possibly like a slur.
Hercules[]
- In his introduction, he is seen to be forcefully grabbing Megara after she tries to get him to join Hades' army, but he takes the offer the wrong way, attempting to kidnap her and forcefully flirts, woos, and trying to forcefully kiss her against her will, refusing to listen to her demands for him to stop.
- Although it was never confirmed, it's heavily implied that he was attempting to sexually assault her, had Hercules not stopped him (more proof is the scene after Hercules saves her and where Hades asks what happened, she tells him that Nessus "Made her an offer she had to refuse").
- When he forcefully grabs Meg and holds her close to him, he says that he “likes them fiery,” implying this is not the first time he’s tried to do this kind of thing to someone.
- Although it was never confirmed, it's heavily implied that he was attempting to sexually assault her, had Hercules not stopped him (more proof is the scene after Hercules saves her and where Hades asks what happened, she tells him that Nessus "Made her an offer she had to refuse").
- When Hercules demands that he let Meg go, he immediately delivers a sucker punch to the heroic demigod in the face, showing the audience that he has absolutely no honor and that he will resort to dirty tactics to gain an advantage against his opponents.
- Despite being a big, strong, and powerful centaur, he isn't a great fighter at all, before Hercules utterly manhandles him with complete ease, showing how pathetic he is.
- His defeat at the hands of Hercules is not only played for laughs (as his tough guy persona is completely shattered added to the comical response of the audience, offering an extremely uproarious and hilarious moment in which his last horse shoe creates a "ringer" around the lump on his head, after Hercules upper cuts him into the sky) but also played for complete satisfaction and stress relief, for what he was attempting to do to Meg.
Trivia[]
- It's pretty obvious that Nessus was attempting to sexually assault Megara, despite the fact it was never stated what he was trying to do her, nor is it ever mentioned again. This wouldn't be too surprising, since some of Disney's media often included mild sexual content vague enough to pass the censors.
- Also this wouldn't be too shocking for a film about Greek mythology (despite the many inaccuracies in Disney's Hercules), where many characters in the myth often like to have their way with women.
