Nicolas "Nicky" Cavella is an enemy of Frank Castle in The Punisher MAX. He is the main antagonist of the volumes "In the Beginning" and "Up is Down and Black is White". He is a high-ranking member of the Italian mafia, standing out as the most arrogant, sadistic and cowardly of them all. His psychopathy dates all the way back to his childhood.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He's Fake Tragic. Despite his aunt repeatedly raping him to "toughen him up" as a child, Nicky had already murdered his parents and 12-year-old sister (and framed his uncle for it) before that point, gleefully and without remorse even as an adult.
- He displays three moments of cowardice:
- Sending his own henchmen on a suicide run against the Punisher, all the while watching the carnage unfold from a safe distance without getting his own hands dirty. Afterwards, when the battle is lost on his end, Nicky holds a fellow Capo at gunpoint and orders him to run towards the Punisher, effectively using him as a meat shield while he runs away for dear life.
- Holding a little boy at gunpoint and threatening to blow his brains out when the Punisher finally has him cornered. He does let the boy go afterwards, but only because the Punisher threatened to give him a more painful death if he didn't.
- Spending his last few minutes alive crying, begging for undeserved mercy, shitting himself, and suffering an overall very undignified death. And this is despite Nicky's nihilistic "f-ck everyone, I'll tell God that too when I die and go to Heaven" rant earlier, thus making him a hypocrite as well.
- He's honestly just as dumb as he is heinous; he thinks he's destined to follow in the footsteps of Marlon Brando when he really couldn't be any more wrong. He had to leave town for 15 years after starting a gang war by killing a fellow crime lord's sons, even making him eat the youngest one who was only in junior high school. His remaining henchmen abandon him because of his constant failed efforts to kill the Punisher, as well as the aforementioned Bad Boss tendencies. He literally pees in the Punisher's family's grave. Go ahead and guess how that last one works out for him.
- He has killed a fairly large number of police officers, CIA agents and military soldiers, even torturing and castrating William Roth for information.
