Nnoitra Gilga is a major antagonist in the manga and anime series Bleach.
He's the 5th Espada of Aizen's army and he has a long history with his archenemy, Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck, the former 3rd Espada, and is the one responsible for giving her her serious head injury, which turned her into a child form with the assistance of Szayelaporro Granz. He symbolizes "Despair", and is heavily implied to be a death seeker.
He was voiced by Nobutoshi Canna in the Japanese dubbed version of the anime, and by Michael Sinterniklaas in the English dubbed version.
What Makes Him A Hate Sink?[]
Background[]
- When Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck belonged to the Espada, Nnoitra repeatedly challenged her to a duel to prove to her that he was stronger, but she never took him seriously due to his childish desire to fight. He once confessed to his subordinate, Tesra, that he intended to defeat Nel because he was irritated by the fact that a woman was stronger in battle than a man, which shows his very sexist attitude.
- He cooperated with Szayelaporro to finally get rid of Nel. He kidnapped and severely wounded Nel's Fracción while she was looking for them, and then, thanks to Szayelaporro's new device, managed to trick Nel, leaving a large scar on her face, giving her amnesia, and reducing her to a defenseless child, after which he threw her away, along with from her Fracción, beyond the walls of Las Noches, into the desert of Hueco Mundo, screaming that she is pathetic.
Arrancar Arc[]
- When he passed Ulquiorra in the corridor in Las Noches, he maliciously asked the 4th Espada how he was doing in "training" Orihime, to which the latter reacted only with disgust, considering his comments rude and condescending.
- When Yasutora Sado defeated Gantenbainne Mosqueda, Nnoitra interfered and defeated Sado very quickly, mocking his strength and calling him a weakling.
- After Ichigo's fight with Grimmjow was over, when the latter did not want to give up and tried to attack the former, Nnoitra unexpectedly dealt a strong blow to the severely wounded Grimmjow, knocking him to the ground, and when he saw that he was still alive, he decided to finish him off personally.
- After Nnoitra was close to defeating Ichigo and revealed to him who Nel really was, he boasted that he had destroyed her mask and reduced her to a child form, and then wanted to kill her, but was prevented from doing so by Ichigo, whom he again easily defeated and tried to break his arm in front of her.
- When Tesra ran towards him in an attempt to help him after being defeated by the adult Nel, Nnoitra merely punched his subordinate hard into a boulder before furiously asking him why he had run towards him instead of holding Orihime hostage.
- When Nel unexpectedly returned to her child form and Ichigo once again tried to protect her from death at Nnoitra's hand, the 5th Espada, after finally knocking down Ichigo, ordered Tesra to finish him off, saying that he could do whatever he wanted to him, while he held Orihime as a hostage, covering her mouth with his hand so that she could only watch helplessly as her would-be savior brutally dies.
- Additionally, in the manga, instead of covering Orihime's mouth with his hand, he pushed two of his fingers into her mouth.
- After Nnoitra had seemingly defeated Kenpachi Zaraki, he slowly approached his lieutenant, Yachiru, with the intention of killing her, regardless of the fact that she was a small child, only for Kenpachi to revealed that he is still not down and ready to fight him.
- When Kenpachi continued his fight with him, it was rather satisfying to see Nnoitra having villainous breakdown over the fact he he can’t even kill him despite using underhanded tactics and seemingly having an upper advantage.
- Overall, Nnoitra Gilga was an extremely repulsive character, not only because of his insatiable bloodlust, sadism, selfishness and extreme arrogance (believing himself to be the most powerful of all Espada), but also because of his strongly chauvinistic-sexist views, believing in male supremacy, as well as regularly insulting female characters such as Nel and Orihime, considering them to be inferior creatures. In addition, Nnoitra has shown that he has no honor whatsoever, resorting to dirty tricks to win (as was the case with Nel when she was still an Espada member), as well as attacking opponents who are already injured from the previous fight to prove how much off a sore loser he is (as was the case with Grimmjow).
