He was portrayed by the late John Huston.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Cross is corrupt in every sense—morally, politically, and sexually. He believes nothing is truly wrong if he wants it, because he sees himself as above morality, above the law, and above consequence. He has no guilt or remorse, only entitlement.
- He is greedy and believes morality is irrelevent. Cross’s worldview is built on the idea that ''money solves everything'', including human suffering and moral consequences.
- Cross uses his wealth and political connections to manipulate: Los Angeles' Water Supply, Government Officials, Law Enforcement and Landowners. His crimes devastate lives on a mass scale, showing how evil multiplies when tied to unchecked power.
- He uses his political connections to orchestrate a massive water scandal, diverting water to land he secretly buys for pennies, demonstrating total disregard for the people of the city suffering from drought. When confronted, he calmly insists that “You may think you know what you’re dealing with… but believe me, you don’t,” showing how untouchable he believes he is.
- He deliberately drains reservoirs at night, creating the illusion of a drought in order to manipulate land values. He exploits the Water Department, political boards, and even the retirement home residents whose names he forges for land purchases.
- The most horrifying aspect of Cross is his incestuous abuse of his daughter, Evelyn Mulwray, with him IMPREGNATING her when she was just 15, resulting the birth causing the birth of his inbred granddaughter Katherine. It’s one of the darkest revelations in film history. It demonstrates his sickening predatory entitlement and total disregard for his daughter's humanity, and he completely revels into it, letting us know how utterly disgusting he is.
- When Jake Gittes tells him people could die because of the water sabotage, Cross doesn’t care as he simply replies with businesslike calm, letting us know that treats the consequences of his actions as “just business,” making him even more detestable.
- He murders his son-in-law Hollis Mulray (Evelyn’s husband) by drowning him, to prevent him from exposing him, and to keep Evelyn to himself.
- He is delusional and a gigantic hypocrite. Cross sees himself as a charming elder stateseman and a friendly grandfather while masking his deceptive and perverted intentions.
- He gets away with every one of his horrible crimes Scott free by the end becoming one of cinema's most infamous examples of a Karma Houdini.
- Overall Cross is a disgusting deviant, with absolutely no likable qualities.
Trivia[]
