Nute Gunray is one of two secondary antagonists (alongside Count Dooku) in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. He is the greedy viceroy of the Trade Federation who launches an invasion of Naboo for his own profit, then later joins the Separatist Alliance and becomes a commander in the Clone Wars, before being betrayed by his master Darth Sidious.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He's a corrupt and greedy official who only cares about profit and self-preservation, and is easily manipulated by Darth Sidious.
- He's a coward and boasts that he never risks his own skin unless he has to.
- As per Sidious' orders, he blockades Naboo and tries to murder Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon when they try to negotiate with him. It's also funny how he is more afraid of the Jedi than he is of Sidious. He proceeds to invade Naboo, having its people starved and put into work camps. He also tries to blackmail Queen Amidala so she will sign a treaty ratifying his invasion, threatening that her people will die otherwise.
- He sends his army to exterminate the Gungans.
- He is terrified of the Sith despite trying to profit by serving them, as he evidently wants nothing to do with Darth Maul and only keeps him around because of his fear.
- He presumes Padme is Sabe's decoy, and is brought to defeat by his sheer stupidity. In a moment of absolutely quintessential hypocrisy, he calls her actions an "insurrection".
- He orders Padme assassinated for helping to defeat him, resulting in Jango Fett making two attempts on her life.
- Along with other Separatist leaders, he tries to have Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Padme executed by three animals reek, acklay and nexu in an arena while they are dishonorably chained and unarmed, ordering Jango to kill them when they get the upper hand.
- He helps start the Clone Wars and along with the other Separatists uses his droid armies to oppress numerous worlds and kill countless innocents because it will make him rich.
- He blackmails Padme's friend Onaconda Farr into betraying her by withholding critical supplies from his people, then reneges on the deal by saying he'll put it "up for debate."
- He disrespects General Grievous by calling him a droid, which he nearly kills him for (despite being more machine than man by a landslide). He also scoffs at him when he says the Separatists will be safe on Mustafar (though to be fair, it's beyond questionable how one can be safe on a lava planet) and throws his defeat on the Invisible Hand in his face.
- When he was the last to be killed by Anakin Skywalker (now Darth Vader), he cowardly begs for mercy (by promising peace between separatists and the Republic) before Vader kills him, despite having shown none to his own enemies. While his death is brutal it's not played for sympathy.
